I remember last year there was a real buzz about the 4th of July with events (American Football, Muscle cars, themed nights etc) on, however this year I'm struggling to find anything going on

Saturday last year and a Monday this year could explain although I would imagine you will still find themed nights in plenty of urban areas

4th of July last year I was holding my girlfriends hand and was telling her to keep pushing and then welcomed my 2nd little girl into the world.

Why would there be celebrations in Dublin for a foreign country's independence?

Exactly, they didn't mark the 1916 rising in any other country.

Paddy's Day is different as it's just a fairly tale piss up excuse.

When I lived in Houston, Texas, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo, and that isn't even celebrated in Mexico very much... Mexican Independence Day is September 16, not May 5. Oh, yeah, and we also celebrated St. Patrick's Day (and Diwali, and Eid Al-Fitr, and...). Welcome to the wide world, any excuse for a party :)

They had events for 1916 in NY this year

I'm sure I will have to graciously suffer through a lot of lovely Irish people wishing me a happy 4th of July. You don't know or have to know that America is the place where things happened to me that I'm glad to not have to be reminded of every time I leave the house, that my generation was the only one actually born in the US (not counting my brother's kids, whose mother was an immigrant), that I was deeply ashamed of the way the US has handled itself in both world and domestic affairs and am even more ashamed of it now that I've moved here. You will be doing it out of love and friendship, and that's what counts. Please don't stop. Just know that when you ask me if I miss it, and I laugh a little and say, "Only the Korean restaurant across the street", I mean that literally. I'm happy here.

I think we're better off having a low key 4th of july OP we don't want to be seen a target for Isis by supporting an american holiday.

Yeah, don't stand next to me, I might attract a bomb or something.

    Seriously?

Who cares about July 4th - what about Canada Day!? Which is today in case you hadn't noticed. They were pretty stupid to decide to celebrate within a week of the USA you'd have to say.

You might want to stay away from Croker in September so because ISIS will be all over the American football match.

Why on earth would events be held in Dublin to celebrate another countries national holiday and if so why that of the United States and not say Swaziland ? Surely if we are to celebrate other countries national holidays why not start with that of our nearest neighbour namely the twelfth of july ? :pac:

Was Canada day not yesterday on the 1st of July.

If there is no/low-key celebrations for the 4th of July, it's because Dublin is saving its money for the real celebration which happens on the 12th.

My husband is from the Strabane area (and is secular and non-partisan). He figures I'm in more danger standing next to him than he is standing next to me. :)

Ah, America is the mongrel nation that'll celebrate any of its tenants' parties. :pac:

As others said, Canada was on the 1st of July (and my 20th work anniversary!!) but you also have the French celebrating on the 14th, and their neighbours the Belgians a week later on the 21st. And we've got the orangey-men up North on The Twelfth.

    July is great fun! (Elsewhere.)

I'm really annoyed about the leap year. It's my birthday on the 4th and now it's a Monday when it would have been a Sunday otherwise. Everyone is much more up for a Saturday night out than a Friday or a Sunday.
