Sky (and the cable companies) will have to have a rethink soon I reckon. With all the main terrestrial stations FTA and in HD, plus an increasing number of "secondary" decent channels moving the same way, it's increasingly hard to justify an expensive TV sub for most people.

Add in services like Netflix and Amazon as well as ready-to-go Android boxes now mainstream (I'm not advocating them, but no point pretending they don't exist either), coupled with high-speed affordable broadband and the traditional Pay TV model can't survive much longer surely - especially given that most people only regularly watch a handful of the dozens or hundreds they get but have to pay for anyway.

Discovery closed Home and Leisure years ago in a channel rationalisation. This channel is showing cheap as hell programming ("Music: RoyaltyFreeMusic.com" in credits there) and is showing infomercials as ads

I do not think this is a Discovery channel, really.

I know! I got excited and thought I could watch all the fishing and home improvement shows, turned it on to see Rod Steward documentary.. I think its called discovery shed now.

I was wondering about this when I found it today - my theory is that Heyday TV (ex Showcase) is coming back as a dedicated channel. Perhaps they've decided to broaden their music remit if that's the case.

Once Saorview launch a proper pvr, add on a Freesat box, problem solved, unless you want sport and movies.

That would be another fail IMO.
What is needed is an integrated, multi-tuner, DVB-T & DVB-S, STB with all the versatility that a self-build provides.

Maybe something like the Mutant HD2400 with software/firmware aimed at this locale.

At present my self-build is only missing the auto retune function of Freesat. OK for my use but not for most households.

Removing "Discovery" from thread title until someone can show me that this channel has anything to do with them.

The Discovery Home and Leisure channel is long gone, they do operate Home and Health on channel 240.

What I'd like is a single box with a single EPG that offers the same functionality and ease of use as a Sky/Freesat box but covers FTA and Saorview/Sat as well as the option of Pay TV if you want it.

Alongside that I'd like to be able to pay for an "EPL package" that would give me all the football regardless of the channel but only that unless I paid extra. You could have a similar setup for Golf etc - only pay for what you actually want rather than bundles of channels with content you have no interest in.

    Probably never happen though :(

That is what I use at present (with the exception that I have not yet enabled auto-retune like Freesat) ... and if I can build it then it would be much easier and cheaper for a commercial entity to do so PROVIDING that they had a sufficient market for it.

Very unlikely indeed ..... Sky & Setanta insist on limiting their card use to Sky boxes only so it seems what you describe will not happen in my lifetime. ;)

Guys, can i ask peoples opinion on whether it is likely this new saorview connect box that is coming soon to ireland will have as part of its makeup freesat added to it. That is really the only type of box i would consider when i finally get rid of a sky subscription.
My guess is i will have to go down the route of a freesat humax box and a walker saorview recordable box for the two rooms that have sky+ and keep the bedrooms with a saorview tv and sky boxes for the free to air channels.
Not having this new box with the freesat epg and saorview epg all in one box with one remote control would be a mistake in my opinion,

I expect them to make that mistake ;)

Saorview Connect is off topic for both this thread and this forum. There's a thread over in terrestrial.
