Mirena Removal issues

    Hi,

My girlfriend had an appointment to have her merina removed today but was told "the string cannot be reached" and has now been asked to go for an ultrasound.

She's not sure what is going to happen next and is pretty unsettled by the possible procedure she may need to have (the doctor said she could need an anesthetic).

Has anyone has experienced this or does anyone have any good advise as to what she can do next? Would appreciate it. Thanks.

Could the doctor see the strings but couldn't reach them?

My friend had to have a scan as hers couldn't be found by doc but they found it on scan. Can't remember if she had to have surgery to remove it.

Invest in a box of Durex til it is determined where it is. It might not be doing its job properly.

I've heard too many stories of coils going missing or moving, put me off ever getting one.

Ya, the doctor couldn't see it.

Not sure exactly what the next step after the scan is. Last thing she wants is surgery.

It'll depend on the findings from the scan. Hopefully ye won't have to wait too long.

There's no way they can find it without an ultrasound even if nothing is wrong but that the threads are up where the doctor couldn't find them manually. It is not uncommon. Many women in developing countries who get the IUD to keep from being exhausted by repeated pregnancies, but are afraid their traditionally-minded husband will find out, get the strings cut completely off. The doctors just need to know where to go to retrieve the thing. It's rarely surgery unless the little thing really has gone walking, in which case there will likely be symptoms of pain and extra bleeding which are not common with Mirena.

Thank goodness for my Paragard. They can leave the thing in until doomsday or menopause (the second of which will probably happen any minute now anyway).

    That happened me too.
My GP couldn't find the string so sent me to my Gynocologist.

He gave me an ultrasound, found it and then removed it.
In my case, I had developed a small cyst which was blocking the string.

It was in the surgical theater of a hospital as they needed to use stirrups but it was
done in minutes, and was completely painless.

She got the ultrasound and was told it is in position fine exactly where it should be!

The original doctor (who couldn't find it) is now referring her on to someone (not sure who yet) with that information.

I'm sure it'll all be fine at some point but wouldn't be rushing back to that original doctor - who was supposed to be a specialist herself!

Just because she is unable to find the threads does not mean she is incompetent.
It is quite common that s doctor cannot find the strings. Sometimes even a gynaecologist cannot find them.
She did the right thing to check a scan and refer to a gynaecologist.

    Just to close this off

She went to the Gynecologist today (Blackrock clinic) and everything was sorted within minutes. The lady there was very good and clued in, she did not need to look at the scan. The mirena was in place just the string was a little hard to find!

As far as she's concerned the Womens Health Clinic (Dun Laoghaire) where she went first were useless! They should not advertise mirena removal. €55 for a visit, €150 for the scan - neither were useful.

Going direct to the Gynecologist probably would have been the best option, apparently this is possible without referral.

Good information, shawty :) And I'm really relieved your girlfriend is fine and the stress is over.
