MCU AGM 2016 Announcement

The 2016 MCU AGM will be held in the Charleville Park Hotel on Sunday 24th of July at 8:00 pm. Please submit committee nominations and motions to secretary@munsterchessunion.org by 17th July to allow publication here 7 days before the AGM.

The AGM is being brought forward from the usual early September date to allow the incoming Committee more time to get established before the Munster Championship and to allow an earlier start to the Munster League.

Early September is a relatively quiet time on the Irish chess tournament scene which makes it an attractive time to hold the Munster Championships as a kick start to the new season.

New FIDE rules mean that League dates have to be submitted several weeks in advance for FIDE rated events. Holding the AGM in early September means that the start of the Munster Lagues has been delayed until early November in recent years.

Moving the AGM to an earlier date will give the new Committee more time to prepare for a bright start to the new season.

Anyone know how the AGM went?

I guess it depends on who you ask really. John Alfred, who is not an MCU member, sent his usual letter to the hotel and Charleville Guards complaining that the ICU Chairman once lived in Jersey and that John would be showing up purely to correct the libel about him on the Munster Chess Union website. He has held up the start of the AGM for about two hours for the last two AGMs by refusing to leave until the Guards arrive to remove him.

This year the MCU had security at the door so the AGM ran on schedule. It is regrettable that this is needed to prevent one person from disrupting the meeting. John was apparently upset that some ICU members with "a great interest in childrens chess" were excluded because they didn't qualify as MCU members. By coincidence one of these was also nominated for Chairman having paid his ICU sub a few weeks ago for the first time in several years. He is also a committee member of John's MJCC which has constantly attacked the MCU.

Other than that the AGM went fairly smoothly. The new League Controller will be Kevin O'Flaherty who won the election against Andrew Ingram and Frank Noonan. Two league rules motions were passed with amendments. The motion to hold the AGM in late May / early June was withdrawn on technical grounds though there seemed to be wide agreement that it made sense.

Loath as I am to get drawn into the quagmire that is Munster Chess politics. I feel that an inaccurate comment must be challenged.

It has been stated elsewhere that the current chairman of the MCU had no club affiliation prior to his election as chairman at last months AGM.

I wish to confirm as a member of the Tralee Chess club that current chairman is a fully paid up member of the Tralee club, our membership runs from September to September of each year.

TCC has no policy on players having duel membership of other club nor those it ask players to list their club affiliation on the ICU website.

I wish everyone one the best for the forth coming season.

I think he also played some matches for Tralee in the League this year. Of course the website to which you refer rarely allows inconvenient facts to overrule a good sob story.
