How to know what you want to do in life?

    Hi,

I am just looking for advice re work. I started a new job a few months ago and while the people are lovely, pay is good, it's just not what I want to do. I wake up every morning wishing it was the weekend. I chose to move jobs because my previous employer was a nightmare to work for and really affected my self esteem. I really don't know what I want to do with my life. I love children and would love to work with them, but going back to university isn't an option. My dream is to be a doctor but it's not possible any more - money, being a single parent, the pressure and study (which I don't work well under anyway).

I was thinking of doing teaching but again, it's a lot of money, study and EVERYONE is telling me not to do it because of the job prospects.

I want to work in something that makes me excited and want to go to work. I work in accounting and while it's ok, at the moment, I don't have much work to do.. and I don't want to invest my time in studying this area either as it's just not what i want to do.

    Any advice?

Teacher and doctor are both extremely different jobs why are you interested in both? They have two things in common they are vocational and they contribute greatly to society. It sounds like you like the idea of having a vocation but you don't actually have one. There are lots of ogre jobs that contribute greatly to society if you are looking for something more rewarding you could try volunteering for a few different places and see if you really enjoy them.
A lot of the so called "rewarding" jobs are difficult to do day to day and can be very physically demanding too so if you are not drawn to them naturally it's kinda pointless.
I think the best way if finding what you want to do is thinking about what you are passionate about and try get as close to that as possible.

My advice to you would be; listen to other people with an open mind, but do not let them decide for you.
Inform yourself, and then make up your own mind.

If teaching is your passion - go for it. Ireland will always need teachers. But be prepared to look a little further afield, to get your 1st permanent post.
