A dramatisation of the Miracle on the Hudson in 2009. Starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. Directed by Clint Eastwood.

Awards season contender? Trailer is very well produced and Hanks is as watchable as ever.

    Out in September.

Tom Hanks looks to be doing grey hair pretty well.

Eastwood can slip into sentimentality quite easily, couldn't warm to Hereafter, but he's made some very good movies in the last 20 years and I like the idea of him working with Tom Hanks. Surprised they haven't worked together before for some reason.

Looks like Billy Lynn's got some competition.

Not due for Irish cinema release according to imdb until December 2nd!!!

Bizarre....why they do this to themselves, thought studios released stuff closer together so as to reduce lost sales due to piracy.

Strange allright, usually it's for "big" releases - guess they don't see this one as a major release ? - Eastwood directing , Tom Hanks stars ??

Saw this in an Imax theater in the US. Very very good indeed. I wasn't sure what to expect but thankfully there was no hollywood heroic crap. A good mix of drama, action and how the main character handles the event, its fallout and the celebrity status thrust upon him. It moves at quite a pace too and is always interesting.

Only complaint is the shoddy CGI used at times.

Yep, some of the exterior shots of the airplane looked quite plastic, tbh.

Anyway, the main event is used 3 times in the film. Sully himself casts a pretty lonely figure at times, stressed from reliving the incident, the investigation (Anna Gunn is one of the NTSB suits), media spotlight, financial pressure* computer simulations (I'd put money on these being real pilots, as opposed to actors) and the key number - 155 souls who were on board. The second time the landing is used is a key reminder of just how little time they had - 208 seconds, not to mention of how the last time an airliner skirted this close New York skyline was a very dark day indeed. The evacuation part is very well handled, sobering. It must have been very cold. It looked real rather than a set.

Eastwood likes his heroes, a point which is scattered throughout the film. I would have thought they'd use the real Sully in parts like the Letterman clip, seemed unnecessary to paste Hanks into things like that.

*I believe the real Sullenberger testified before Congress that pilot pay is pretty poor.

Im not sure why there's already HD rips of this online, but there is!

Not great by any means. If Hanks wasnt in this it'd be TV Movie With Bigger Budget type stuff.

    6/10

I really enjoyed this. Eastwood really is a quite subtle film maker and totally underrated when compared to more "showy" directors. Hanks, as usual, does a very good turn as the pilot and, despite everyone knowing the outcome, the film manages to sustain tension the whole way through.

Any one spot the Gran Torino poster in one of the Times Square scenes ? :D

I thought this was very good. Solid all the way through, good script and Tom Hanks is as per usual, brilliant. You completely forget youre watching Tom hanks, he becomes sully and thats a mark of a master of his craft. Aaron eckhart is excellent aswell.

Saw this the other night - wasn't necessarily top of my list but was the only viable option for our once in a blue-moon-yay-we-have-babysitters trip to the cinema.
Thought it was solid and entertaining throughout - Hanks is maturing into quite an excellent actor.
The only bum note for me was the several calls back to the wife at home - really pointless but an easy payday for Laura Linney I guess

I don't like all Eastwood's films as director but I rate him very highly as a filmmaker, (better than when he was acting). His films aren't big flashy extravaganzas but they usually hook you in and get you emotionally involved, Million Dollar Baby being the best example IMHO. I think he's the antithesis of Scorcese, who's far too often busy putting flashy, superficial gaudiness into his movies that he overlooks the soul/human aspect.

I think Clint is a far superior director. (Bonus mark to him too for managing to extract a watchable performance from Eckhart in Sully).

Enjoyed Sully a lot. Despite already knowing the story and having seen a few documentaries about it previously it still seemed quite fresh and interesting. One thing I didn't realise was the extent to which they tried to blamed Sullenberger for his actions. Very enjoyable.

    Wow what an insult lol

The narrative of this tale was severely stretched out in this movie. It could have been told in 50 minutes. Hence the repeated flashback to fill it out. How many times did see the aircraft crashing, or about to crash.

It wasn't a bad film by any means. Good choice in Hanks. He always does the morally upstanding citizen very well.

Didn't mean to insult Hanks - it's just that I hated his output for a long time...thought he always overdid the mawkish/sentimental stuff.

Thought he was very good in this, but not quite as excellent as he was in Captain Phillips

Ah no I wasn't giving out. I think you assessment of his roles and his 'thing' are correct.

He was good in Captain Phillips as you say, not that I cared for this 'all americal' movie. Hanks in Castway was my fave film of his.

Good movie I thought. I didn't realise that the investigation tried to pin the blame on the captain. That story, along with Tom Hanks and directed by Clint Eastwood could surely never fail!

I thought it was a poor enough film which looks like it had to bend the truth to make it anything more than an episode of air crash investigations.

Considering the whole incident lasted a couple minutes they had to drag it ou a bit.

They absolutely didn't try in real life to pin it on sully.

    Let's call that creative licence

Poor phrasing from my part. What I should have said is I didn't realise it that the investigation questioned his judgement.

I really enjoyed it, they crafted a good story out of a short enough event where you know how the plane landed. Little bits of the dialogue were funny like the repeated to and fro comments about the bird strike and both engines being out. Given that its based on a real event I was left wondering how unique Sully's choice was and what would a less experienced by the numbers pilot have done? as a movie job done.
