    Hi everyone
Trying to understand what influences the speed of broadband, I am considering moving providers.
When Sky and Eir checked the line they say the max the line can provide is 25mbps
Then Virgin , asked them is there much point going for their 360 mb plan if there is a max line speed ....they reckon yes as there super duper new modem will allow better speed to be achieved ?
is this how broadband works ... Don't want to waste money getting a high level plan if I wont see the benefit of it....

Virgin do not use the Eir network, they use their own cable TV network which doesn't have the distance/speed limitation of copper pair.

I recommend taking a look at the Virgin 'Talk To' forum on boards before making the leap.

Virgin use their own coax cables, eir, vodafone, sky, ... etc. use open eir's fibre to the cabinet(and copper to your home) cables.

So yeah virgin can send you 360mbps, any other provider can only get you around 25.

Unless you're in a FTTH area offered by SIRO, or Open Eir.
SIRO is offered only by Vodafone right now.
Open Eir's FTTH is only offered by Eir and Pure Telecom at the moment.
Both of these offer 150, 350, and 1000 mbps speeds.
These speeds should be very close to the advertised speeds in reality. None of that "up to" bs.

its a good read but bear in mind satisfied customers dont pop onto that forum to tell everyone how good it is. Grain of salt and all that.

Exactly. Virgin are rated as by far the fastest ISP in Ireland.
