Looking to carry out some upgrades to my 2011 MBP to make it last a few more years.

I've seen people remove the optical drive and installing a second hard drive in it's place, has anyone here done a similar upgrade?

also wouldn't mind installing a bit more ram, anyone have any insight on what's the best model to use?

I only really use this machine to run one program, and hold a tonne of music, so i only need storage space and a bit more ram.

A 16GB RAM upgrade is a must imo. Just input your MacBook specs here and you'll find all the compatible components. And replacing the HD with an SSD would be the next port off call depending on how much you're willing to spend. The SSD upgrade would make the biggest impact upon speed of your MacBook for sure.

In my mid-2012 MBP, I've upgraded the RAM, replaced the original HDD with a SSD and replaced the optical drive with another SSD. The first two of these upgrades are as simple as they come and can be done in literally five minutes. Probably easiest to do both at the same time. The third one was slightly more involved but is not by any means difficult. A good set of tools and an excellent iFixit Guide and it is very straightforward.

Just make sure you adequately research how to clone your drive before you start if you don't intend doing a fresh install of the OS.

SSD Upgrade > RAM upgrade btw in terms of overall effectiveness in speeding up your machine.

Thanks for the tips, going to be looking at doing this over the winter at some point, i'd really rather not buy a new machine, as i love my current one, just wouldn't mind making it a bit more peppy! :)
