Hi all, I had an accident back in November I went into the back of a car (he pulled out as i was stopping for traffic at roundabout and jammed on his brakes) very little damage to his car done small dint on bumper. He called the gardi within the space of the 5 seconds it took me to get out and go to his window, they themselves said that there was no real reason for them to stay as all ins. Was above board and both cars could be driven. He insisted his couldn't be and one of the gardi got on his hands and knees to try figure why he thought that!

And surprise surprise hes claiming personal injury which judging by his attitude and giving me a false number didnt surprise me.

Problem is I didn't renew my insurance which was due for renewal the following week as I was a bit shook up and I was also still on my provisional (stupid I know) so needed to cover the costs of my car (bumper and licence plate) .

Now almost 8 months later still open as insurance are waiting on a medical report from his solicitor and I haven't been able to drive since as I stupidly didn't renew not thinking it would be so long. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get back on the road as I am lost without my car also have been offered a new role in work and need to be able to drive as no public transport will get me to where it is situated? TIA

Your existing insurer are the only one that will quote you and they will likely only quote you if they are compelled to by the declined cases committee.

Ring 3 insurers, get them to issue you with letters of declinature.

Ring your last insurer, ask them for a quote.

If they decline then go to the declined cases committee with the 3 letters and they will make your last insurer quote you.

Be prepared for a hefty premium and minimum cover ie probably third party only.

Is that what actually happens? Can they say "right so, your premium is €9k, let me know whether you want it or not.."

It wouldn't be that much because charging silly premiums like that is essentially refusing to quote.

Over the last few months I've seen a number of declined cases quotes, average premiums would be €3000 and TPO cover on them all.

Companies can be compelled to quote, doesn't mean they have to quote cheaply.

That's what I was wondering, what's the ballpark. €3K seems reasonable enough considering, when you think how much a personal injury claim could typically cost. I pay one fifth of that, and I would imagine I'm in amongst the lowest risk profiles there is.

It is unfortunate for people that have had bogey claims lodged against, they are essentially screwed but as you say, for a risk that nobody else wants it's pretty fair.
