Cheapest car to run over the next few years

Ok folks, I'm doing about 3000 miles a year, got a family, kids and a mortgage so priorities have changed. I need a car that gets me about once or twice a week to the gym etc

I've looked around on the internet but can't find anything that takes my fancy.

It needs to be the cheapest car I can run per year.

    - I'm Only doing about 3000 miles per year
    - Tax needs to be as cheap as possible
    - Insurance the same (although I'm 34 with many years ncb it shouldn't be too bad)
    - Preferably petrol for all the miles I do
    - I don't mind paying a few bob for a new-ish car as long as the daily running cost benefits are worth it.
    - Can be a small hatchback I don't mind

My Tax/insurance costs at the moment are 1200 per year on a 2.0 petrol so I'm looking to at least half that ideally.

    Has anyone anything in mind?

In order to safe €600 on tax and insurance you want to spend several thousand Euro:confused: Even if you only spend €2k on a car it'll take 3 years to break even.

Current car is a 2005 2.0 petrol Clio Sport. Worth about €3000 on a good day.

so that's €710 a year on tax and my insurance is about €500 = €1200.

that's not including petrol or servicing and parts etc which can be expensive.

And that's fine. It's the yearly running costs I've an issue with at the moment. I don't mind spending say 6-8k on a car

I didn't ask for opinions on if I should actually have a car or not. I'm asking for a car that will reduce my daily/yearly running costs.

where I need to travel to, whether it be to the gym, swimming pool, with the kids to creche etc buses, taxis and cycling will not cut it.

Not unless the car depreciates by €1800. At the end of 3 years he will still have an asset he can sell. The cost of a car across 3 years should be taken as the depreciation + running costs. It's altogether reasonable that he'd like something newer that will be reliable and cheaper to run. I'd much rather sink the extra money into a nicer/newer car than higher running costs anyway.

How about something like this OP? https://www.donedeal.co.uk/cars-for-sale/be-a-little-different-get-honda-cr-z/11959185

now that's interesting, €200 road tax is nice but lack of anything I'd call a rear seat would be the killer especially now I've a kid.

Found this on a CRZ forum https://store.donanimhaber.com/c5/25/26/C525266CCA3294450B87EADEDA0636D7.png

    Might be interesting.

Lots of space for the kids and nice to drive also. I may be biased as I drive one currently but I am getting 58 mpg and it's a pleasure to drive on my short commute to work.

    170 tax also

It's only average 57 miles a week, a little micra or a cnut to get into.

A car depreciates around 40-50% over 3 years time. The newer the car, the MORE depreciation cost you have...

If you actually want to save money, sell the Clio, buy a 1.0 Yaris/sirion/micra or whatever for sub €2k with the money you get for the Clio.

Any other scenario isn't really saving money.

Yes I understand that. It's about hitting a sweet spot, finding a car that will hold its value. The assertion that the poster made about breaking even after 3 years was only correct if the car depreciated from €2000 to €200, which is unlikely.

Very happy with my 998cc Yaris... I pay less than 600 for full coverage insurance (I'm a married middle-aged woman and my husband doesn't drive at all) and I think tax is 199... I don't use the car much because I work from home, but each month a tankful will get me to Galway once or twice plus the grocery and errands a couple times a week. It's just a somewhat dowdy way to get from here to there, an '03 model, but cheap to run and maintain. My best asset is a good mechanic who likes me because I baked him cookies when I bought the car from him, heh.

    How about electric?
Cheapest tax you can get (€120).
No real servicing costs other than tyres.
    Electricity is cheaper than petrol

You would need to be able to install a home charge point but thats a once off thing. The one below comes with the charge point so you just give a sparky €100 to install it and after that its the cheapest motoring you will get.

I think a golf would be good, its cheap to run, not sure bout insurance but should be cheaper than your current car.
Not only cost wise would it be better but you have a kid and having space is a must in a car, like if you have to bring friends or collect toys or anything, a small car would struggle but golf is decent size
