For high quality digital music enjoyment is a DAC and headphones all I need?

I currently have all my music in FLAC format on my cheap old Windows XP computer. I am listening using VLC player, through a set of cheap PC speakers that came with the computer. Obviously this is a lousy set up. I want to start listening to my music the right way.

My needs are very basic, I just want to listen to FLAC files or high-resolution audio files through headphones.

I have no interest in other audio sources like radio, turntables, TV, DVD, Blu Ray, Set Top Boxes, Gaming consoles etc.
I don't know anything about online music, casting or streaming (Probably something to do with fishing is my guess).
    I don't own a tablet or an MP3 player.
I don't need speakers as I live alone and prefer the immersive experience of headphones.

I have done a bit of googling and as far as I can tell all I really need to get the full digital hi-resolution sound I would like to be experiencing is a DAC and a good pair of headphones. Am I correct in this or am I over simplifying things?

My understanding is that the PC will just output the FLAC file through the optical output or USB to the DAC, therefore the type of PC, processor, sound card or software doesn't matter at all. The DAC will convert the digital file into the analogue source that the headphones will deliver, therefore those are the only two important components.
