Refund for alternative travel arrangements?

My Aer Lingus flight from Marseille to Dublin was cancelled yesterday due to an Air Traffic Control strike. I will receive a refund from Aer Lingus. I am seeking advice to see if there is anything I can do to seek a refund for my alterior travel arrangements which did get me back to Ireland. These arrangements came at a very costly price compared to the refund I have been promised from Aer Lingus. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Have you contacted your travel insurance provider?

Not unless you had travel insurance. That is what it is for.

So who other than Aer Lingus and your travel insurance company, were you looking to claim from? I'm confused.

I am only seeking advice. Nothing to be confused about.

Do you mean alternative travel arrangements?

You are correct. I should have said alternative.

I contacted my insurance company who said there is nothing they can do for me because my delay did not last over twelve hours.

Don't let them away with that, you were not subject to a 'delay', your flight was cancelled and you had to make alternative arrangements for which you should be entitled to some level of reimbursement. It sounds like you were speaking to a call agent who was following a script - you need to remove the word 'delay' from the conversation, it was a cancellation.

But if I was you I'd first read the policy because ultimately that will tell you whether you can claim or not, I really would only phone them as a last resort because all you get are robots reading scripts and most of whom are trained to bamboozle you with smokescreens to discourage you from claiming in the first place.
