Hey guys, I recently bought a 2005 BMW 1 series 2 weeks ago (11th June) and for the most part I'm really enjoying it. However there's a list of snags below which are annoying:

    * Second key doesn't lock doors; unlock, boot and starting car are working fine.

    * Passenger window does not work when operated from driver's side, works fine from passenger side.

    * The "Rest" button on the climate control doesn't work (light doesn't come on and no noticeable change in air con levels).

    * There's an aux input under the armrest, there's a cigarette lighter socket here that doesn't work.

    * Washers jets, only the front driver's side jet shoots out water but pressure is low (so low that it's only barely hitting above where the wipers rest). The passenger side jet and rear window jet do not work.

    * The car came with no bit to remove the wheel nut

Are these known problems with the E87 1 series? I know the car is 11 years old and all of the things listed above are minor but as a whole I feel like I've been duped.

I've been on to the garage where I bought the car just mentioning the electric window issue and wheel bit (this is before I noticed the other issues), they said they'd order in the part and text me but it's been 10 days now.

What would ye do? I'm going to contact them tomorrow to see about the part but I'm tempted to just find someone else to fix it as I don't really mind paying as long as things are done right.

Dealer likely only gave gearbox and engine warranty on a car that old, the invoice will detail what's covered, sadly I don't think any of those faults will be. Here's possible solutions...

Could be a cheap fix as to just buy a new casing on Ebay and transfer the electronic bits from key in to it.

    * Passenger window does not work when operated from driver's side, works fine from passenger side.
Most likely switch on drivers door has failed and needs replacement

    * The "Rest" button on the climate control doesn't work (light doesn't come on and no noticeable change in air con levels).
Is it possible the rest function is dependent on the air set to recirculate first?

    * There's an aux input under the armrest, there's a cigarette lighter socket here that doesn't work.
Most likely the fuse has blown, check the user manual to see which one this is.

    * Washers jets, only the front driver's side jet shoots out water but pressure is low (so low that it's only barely hitting above where the wipers rest). The passenger side jet and rear window jet do not work.
Likely passenger side is blocked, try spraying it with air from garage or get a needle or pin to try to unblock.

    * The car came with no bit to remove the wheel nut
These can be purchased at any motor factors, Halfords etc

The locking wheel nut key is unlikely to be got from a factors. Dealer only. We tell customers to bring the car and try all the keys from the master set one by one. There are about 20 different designs. Not expensive.

Are you sure there is not a selector to stop the passenger window being operational? My civic has that. New window switch will be expensive.

Second the air for the washers.

If you need a new key it is 188 Euro.

Haven't heard any of these as common, except the wheel key. :)

For lower pressure washers check to make sure none of the pipes supplying water has cracked. BMW plastic is crap.

Yup I think that's what the invoice says, I'll have to double check though pretty sure brakes were covered too. I don't mind if these issues aren't covered, it is after all an old car.

Should I not be supplied with a wheel nut key though? from your post it kind of implies that I shouldn't as if the dealer only has a single one.

There's no selector to lock the window, there's a switch that has two positions but that's for the electric wing mirrors.

Will try the air in the washer jets when the weather breaks.

Will check that when the weather is a little better to get under the hood.

I have been reading up online about the washer jets and it seems like the water in the pump can become blocked with congealed fluid, http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f125/2009-e92-335d-coupe-windscreen-washer-problem-fixed-t68810/ fix seems simple enough but not one I'd be comfortable doing myself.

You can buy a replacement locking nut from a BMW dealer for between €10 and €15.

Those keys get lost commonly. We always have 1 of each in stock and reorder when sold.

If the fluid is congealed it is likely aftermarket fluid was used. It sounds like a scam by dealers but it is a fact that bmws need bmw washer fluid. It's not expensive and it won't cause issues.

The Rest system, if it is the same as the one in the E38/39 then it should only work when the engine is off. It is used when you're stopped for a while to keep the hot air flowing by drawing the heat from the engine.

Cool I'll visit a dealer on the weekend to get one. I'd well believe that you need to buy bmw washer fluid, can this is be bought anywhere other than a dealer?

My AC unit turns off with the engine, doesn't turn on with the ignition I'm probably missing something though

*EDIT* so I just went out to the car, tried the washer jets whilst standing outside of the car, could hear water over on the passenger side. opened the bonnet and noticed the tube running from the passenger side jet down to the reservoir was completely disconnected, clicked it into place and boom both jets working at full pressure. Have to say - even though this is my first car I've owned - I'm chuffed with myself.
