So I am looking at trying to rent a room and want to have some questions when I attend the viewing with the current renter(s).

Obviously, I am going to have to come up with some of my own depending on my preferences but I am looking for some general questions to give me a flavour of the current tenants without making it look like I'm interrogating them after all I want them to pick me too.

Mainly I would like to weed out mentals, neurotics, but also get a good understanding of the house environment.

Are you in Dublin? If so then you can have questions but it will probably put you out of the running. I had over 100 replies when I advertised a room last autumn and things have gotten worse since then.

Wow, really? I thought it would be seen as a good thing; like when you go for a job you're supposed to ask some questions as they inform them about you too.

Most likely that they will make a decision the minute you walk in the door. When I moved back to Dublin in 2000 it was almost as bad as now and it was the most frustrating thing ever.

Most decisions are made when the email comes. Only people who measure up as regards age, occupation and gender will even be invited to view.

True - but still a decision has to be made after that - by both parties. and that's sometimes done on personality. (Some people do take the first age/gender/occupation matching applicant - but you may not want to live with them.)

In some ways, it doesn't matter what you ask - just that you are able to chat sensibly. And of course you are checking the same thing of your prospective housemates. Typical questions for doing this include:

Where do you work - what do you do - what hours do you work?

Where do people living around here go to the pub / clubbing / <<wherever you do your socialising>>

How do you organise housework, and paying for common things (toilet paper, light bulbs, cleaning materials).

How are bills (eg power) organised - what's the typical cost?

    What's the landlord like?

What's the neighbourhood like? Are there any <<whatever you're in to>> clubs around here?
