A friend of mine is buying a house in Finglas, and has noticed the electricity is off.

Is there a charge for switching the electricity back on, how long does it take ?

My friend does not know the previous owners, and is wondering if he is liable for their costs , if any ??

Any help would be greatly received.

    Hi celt2005,

Thank you for getting in touch.

The cost would depend on how long the property has been disconnected.

A regular reconnection will cost €79.45. If the property has been disconnected for over six months and up to two years a wiring cert from an registered electrician would be required along with the reconnection fee. This cert would need to be sent to ESB Networks, as they manage and maintain the electricity network for all suppliers.

This appointment can be requested over the phone with our colleagues on 1850 372 372 (Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm). The appointment will usually a take place within two to three working days from when it is requested or when the wiring cert is received. It will depend on the availability of a technician in your local area.

Should the property be disconnected for more than two years, any request for a reconnection would need to be made directly to ESB Networks as this is treated as a brand new connection, and theu would advise how much this would cost. Once the MPRN number has been confirmed and any necessary work completed by ESB Networks, your friend may contact a supplier to register as a customer and ask for a reconnection. Once ESB Networks receive this request from a supplier, the reconnection will be completed.

If you have any other queries, please let us know. We would be happy to help.

    Thanks,
    Aoife

    Aoife,

Appreciate the prompt response, and the detail provided.

On the other issue mentioned, he is not liable for any bills left by the previous tenant, is that correct?

Also Aoife, what do the ESB charge if they have to perform the check?

    Hi again celt2005,

That is correct - a customer is only liable for a bill that is in their name.

If there is an outstanding bill for the property from before they moved in, only the person, in whose name that bill is, would be liable for it. A correspondence address can be changed on a bill but not a name.

    Hope that helps.

For any further queries, we are here on Boards and our other Social Media channels until 6pm.

    Kind regards,
    Una
