Is anyone else doing the Run Killarney half on July 23? I've signed up and it will be my first half marathon :) Just did my longest LSR yet of 18.3k in preparation for it. I've been trying to do lots of hilly routes as well to try and get the legs used to that. A couple of questions for those that have done it in the past - is water provided in bottles or cups and are there port-a-loos on the course :o

Hi, I did this race last year and enjoyed it a lot...not doing it this year as I have races on the following two weekends after it so decided against this one.
One thing to note about the route is that it's downhill for the first 9 miles or so but within that downhill it's a good a few kicks up here and there. From my experience last year it is best to not go all out for those 9 miles or else you will pay for it over the last 4 miles or so. You loop around Muckross House for a bit and there is some little climbs there and given the downhills you've been running for a lot of the race don't be surprised if your quads are screaming a bit.
As for water, it was bottles last year. Can't recall how many stops but off hand I think maybe 3-4 and they also had bananas at halfway.
Can't recall portaloos at all to be honest.

Make sure to wear some warm clothing as you're getting dropped out on the buses to the start as last year we were out at Moll's Gap for maybe 45mins before the start and it was quite windy. They had a bus that you could drop a bag into and collect it at the finish which was very handy.

Thanks Diego_b, that is all very helpful information. Yes,the downhill has me a bit worried! I've been trying to do a lot of hills in my runs, my last LSR was 18km and had 180m of ascent/descent, but as this will be my first half marathon I have no idea what pace to aim for at the start that's not too fast. Guess I'll find out on the day if it was too fast or slow!

No worries and if you have anymore questions please ask, I'll stick a follow on the thread.
Owing to the route I would suspect that you will run the first half a good bit faster than maybe planned but make sure it's nice and controlled. There was some people last year who went out like the clappers and no doubt paid for it later. A fella I know I passed around 10 miles finished I think 3 mins behind me so I guess he was in a world of pain to have slowed by that much.
They did have pacers last year, I think 2hr and 1hr 50 at least that I can recall.

If you can find some good long downhills around your area it's worth doing some practicing on running downhill.
Good luck with your debut at the half marathon distance, I hope it's a nice clear day for you as really nice views out there.
