Vanos pulley - Mini Cooper

    Hi Guys

I brought my car to a garage today and was told that the 'vanos pulley' is possibly seizing. He said it's a big job (one which he would not take on himself) and will cost approx €700-€800.

My car is an 07 Mini Cooper.

    Symptoms:
    1) The car revvs when I turn on the engine, only initially, then it stops.
    2) The power has reduced significantly. When I drive in 6th gear I struggle to overtake.
    3) The car 'jumps' when I put it into reverse.
    4) The car cuts out frequently at traffic lights.

    Any ideas?

A previous mechanic ran a diagnostics check and said it was just my 'exhaust valve' and would cost approx €200.

I'm very confused at present. It's a stunning mini, the spec is very high, and it only has 80,000km on the clock. If I have to pay €800 in thinking I might be better off trading it in and going for a PCP plan, perhaps a Golf or Mazda 3.

    All opinions/suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks
    HW
