    Hey folks,

just looking for information on what courses are recommended for masters degree in primary education? There are a few courses available but I would love to know from anyone who has spent money on completing one and which they would recommend?

I am looking at the Hibernia College course but it is expensive. Has anyone completed this course?

    Thanks,

    Mac

It is an expensive course whatever way you do it. I would recommend doing it in a university as some schools/principals don't regard Hibernia in the same light. Although others do just be aware.

The main thing to ask yourself before doing this course is: what are my teaching subjects? If you have English/History/Business, there is an oversupply of teachers and you will be lucky to get work. If you only have a subject like CSPE - don't waste your money as you will never get a job. You have to have subjects where there is a demand for them.

Also consider your own situation. Can you study to be a teacher with no income, a major cut in your pay (which isn't likely to change soon), spend a few years travelling the country/getting by on subbing/sick leaves/maternity leaves, have to work a year before getting anything somewhat permanent ie a CID? Do you have a family/mortgage or want them?

Why do you want to be a teacher? If it's for the holidays/handy job - don't bother - that's what the teacher haters think but it is a difficult but really rewarding job. Have you experience in schools? what sector do you want to work in? Have a search on boards for all the reasons why you shouldn't be a teacher - it is an eye opener. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057159912

Finally, if you are certain that teaching is right for you - go for it. I would probably still do it as it was the only thing I wanted to do and enjoy it but it's important to know what is in store for you. If there is anything else, feel free to ask. Best of luck with your decision.
