Is it mandatory to apply for Public Services Card?

I am in ireland for last 3 years and have PPS number only. A colleague told me to apply for this card as it will replace PPS. Is it so?

    Many thanks

It will be mandatory if you need to apply for any Social Welfare payments as you need it to collect payment from a post office. I don't know any other use for it, except as ID.

But as it's free, why not get one in case you lose your job or some other catastrophe occurs in your life and you need to claim something from the state?

I would say yes. I am in the process of renewing my passport, and the website states you must send this card with application form. So if you ever need to renew passport it's a must. Better to have it than not have it.

That must be very new because I got a new passport last month and didn't have to send one.

Edit: Where on the site does it say that? I can't find it.

It's for lost, stolen or if your passport is older than 2005 which would be for some people who haven't renewed. But looking at it properly it looks like that's all its required by for. So yes, you're right. Sorry about that.

i think eventually everyone will have one? they are in the process of sending out a letter to everyone to attend a centre to get one, i think older people don't have to attend and can just agree to use passport photos on file.

    Don't think that's true at all .
Every one issued one will have to attend an appointment with full information required and have their photo taken at the same time

    hawkeyethenoo is correct.

    From Welfare.ie site -

    Postal registration

Some current Department of Social Protection (DSP) clients can be issued with a Public Services Card by postal registration. If this applies to you the DSP may write to you asking your permission to use data that is already held by a government department (such as your passport photograph or Free Travel Pass photograph). If you give your consent to this data being used your Public Services Card can be issued directly by post and you do not need to visit an office to register in person. The letter will also ask you for answers to some security questions. These answers will be used to check your identity if you need to contact a DSP helpline.

Odd been your picture is supposed to be run against photo facial recognition software which is pointless when an old passport photo is used
