In this instance they seem to have shat on the OPs face and it fell onto the pillow when he woke up.

Yeah I was going to say mascara too, actually.
If I go to bed wearing my make-up, I wake up the next day and there's black streaks and bits of black crumbs all over the pillow.
S'all it is.
Tell your wife to take her make-up off before she goes to bed.
Or take your own mascara off.

Has anyone that sleeps in that bed been doing any work recently involving a dusty environment and where they have been sweating a lot?

Actually if that is the bare pillow then that is mould from sweaty heads sleeping on the pillow, pillow needs to be changed or washed and should be aired(puffed up) more often in the morning
