Comma before a name

I keep seeing people put a comma before someone's name, for example "You're right there, John." or "Happy birthday, Sarah." Is this correct? It doesn't seem it to me but I'm seeing it more and more.

It's 100% correct (vocative comma) but I seem be seeing it less and less (which makes me sad).
