My friend called me there re a used car they bought 5 months ago.
They booked an nct online last week and say nct have called querying the car asking name chassis number etc and saying it's not in her name.
This car was bought from main dealer one owner and log book issued as normal from shannon.
What do you make of that?

Firstly, Why query it? I don't believe name is even entered when booking.
I'm thinking it's either a scam of some sort or the car is supper dodgy to the point of it being flagged.

No issue.... NCT properly just don't have an updated record regards the current ownership.

Is it possible someone has cloned the car and there's a 2nd fake car going around with another logbook which now holds their data instead of your friends?

It is I guess. Its very strange. Why would nct even query it if it was just that owner change had not gone through to their system. Anyone can nct a car

You should put the reg in to www.motortax.ie on the vehicle transaction page and see if it says a new book has been issued in the last 3 months.

Cert was received from shannon as normal. Dealer did the transfer. It showed up at the time on motortax.ie cause I was showing her that the transfer was done.
Checking today -there are no changes in last 3 months.

I just don't get what would cause concern to ncts? Name of owner Is not important.

Was it definitely NCTS? Did they ask for card details to confirm or anything?

Firstly this is what I thought but I doubt it. Will find out more later.

Very strange. As you say no name is entered at any stage when booking an NCT online. Also as far as I know there is no requirement that the person booking the NCT must be the registered owner of the car. I regularly book NCTs for customer's cars and it has never been an issue.

I'd say it screams scam but where exactlyis the scam? Unless they are also looking for card details over the phone under the pretence of "confirming the booking"??

Make sure they don't give out the card details. Would be a handy scam as if you had a pool of cars that were due an NCT, you could wager a few are booked. Ring up a punter to confirm the car details etc, cite some reason for a quick check, and move onto asking for the card on the booking. I'd say many people would give it out without question.

Well to update. It seems there were a few bookings put through for the car as the site was crashing mid booking. This was the reason for them calling.
They then got talking to the owner that didn't match their records.
They later came back to say records were now up to date and all was well.
