Can anybody tell me why Irish stadiums don't have roofs?, they put the roof on the stadium in France last night for the Euro game and I was wondering why we don't have that facility here given our climate?

I'd love to drive the balls out of one of the sports models, are you inferring that the cost is huge in a roundabout way?

Too costly? our sports bodies are hardly short of a few quid though?

The FAI are still paying back their portion of the loan for Landsdowne Road, and will be for many years to come.

Edit: They also need private donations just to employ the national team management team.

Apart from the gaa, hell yes our sporting bodies are certainly sort of monies.

Actually including the gaa, I cannot think of any major sport stadia development that has been done recently without governmental funding.

How much extra would a roof be? You'd think it would be a priority given the country we're living in?

But when was the last time a game was called off at Landsdowne Road, Croke Park, Thomand Park because of a waterlogged pitch?

We get rain on a lot of days, (usually) not a lot of rain on 1 day. modern pitches have drainage so they don't get waterlogged.

I am a bit of a cat when it comes to rain, I hate drizzle even. It'd be a bit more comfortable to have a roof, for concerts too, rather than having to stand there in a sheet of plastic :o

In very general terms - a stafium roof can cost an additional 100-150million on top of the stadium cost. Significant when you consider say Croke Park cost 260m and Aviva at approx €400m!

Why bother.. Yes, we get a lot of rain here, but we're not exactly cancelling games every week as a result.

So keep your umbrella handy, you won't see retractible roof stadiums here any time soon. Maybe if we were guaranteed a major tournament (world cup/euros etc) but we wont because the rest of our infrastructure is **** in comparison.

Dublin is one of the host cities for Euro 2020.

    Landsdowne Road will be used.

Also worth considering that a GAA pitch is substantially bigger than a soccer one so would increase the spans and substantially increase the cost.

Also : absolutely no chance of retrofitting one unless the stadium was designed with one in mind! The restricted nature of the Croke Park and Aviva sites would also be an added cost.

I'd prefer to see the money spent on a lot of other things first!

We only seem to build a proper stadium on three sides of the pitch

I'd love if they 'finished' Croke Park, they could leave the Hill as is, and just complete the top tier of seats around it.

    Would look/sound amazing

AFAIK, and I stand to be corrected, Turners Cross and the Aviva are the only all-seated (4 sides) grounds in the country.

If that's the stage that we're at then a roofed stadium is a long way off !!!

I think McHale Park in Castlebar might be.

No very comfortable but I think the concrete benches wrap right the way around.

It's been a few years since I was there - sadly missed the great occasion last week!!!! ;-)

    It's a cultural thing too.
All schools in France, and specially the primary schools, has a shelter for the kids outside .
