Cheap as chips on Ebay now. What do these things actually do? I assume that they just increase fuel flow. I know that they would be problems with insurance if not declared etc, so not interested in that side of it. Do the claims of 30+ extra bhp and increased mpg actually translate into reality? I'm thinking you could have increased bhp or mpg, but not both.

No. Simply from insurance liability PoV.

Those things are a complete scam.

Watched a few YouTube vids where guys bought them and tried them on rolling roads.

    They had Zero effect.

All it consists of is a resistor and a few led's , and a lot of placebo.

Either get a remap from someone local and reputable, or go to your main dealer.

Some main dealers can offer recoded ecu's and other bits and bobs.

    Ie, bmws power performance kits

Get a bench remap, or a dealer upgrade.

Those cheap as chips ebays mods will add as much bhp as go faster stripes, without the astethics

Hard to believe some people still fall for these. Been around as long as a Nigerian scam.

The ebay ones are more than likely a scam but there are plug in boxes that work such as DTUK and Burger Motorsports.

Cannot believe Burger hasn't more obvious following in Ireland. Pink fogs and a big BURGER windscreen vinyl.

How much does a remap cost? Is it worth it?

Between €300 and €400 and there is a nice difference in responsiveness and torque if mapped properly.
