Hey, i have been looking at watches on ebay.co.uk and adverts. Im wondering if there are any good private sale sites based in the UK or Europe for watches?

Im not exactly sure what im looking for but something in the fairly affordable category, ive seen some online used watch dealers but they seem to be more the likes of rolex etc.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

chrono24 charge the seller 4% for listing and buyer 3.6% for secure checkout and most of the stock can be found cheaper from the seller on ebay or even their own websites

use ebay and adverts and use paypal for buyer protection

Watch finder is twice the price of what they should be
Ladies aquaracer I have for sale for €750 and that's adverts price so it's inflated to allow for haggling, it is on the for over a grand (sterling)

    Very highly priced imo

they are a business not a private individual . no shop will sell for the price of a private seller . and they offer warranty and a guarantee that it is genuine . also something no private seller can do . boxes and papers prove nothing , they can easily be faked .

ebay and adverts.ie is beyond riddled with fakes . its like playing russian roulette buying off ebay its a joke. which is a shame because it makes it harder for genuine sellers . at least with adverts you can agree to meet up and check out the watch or get it checked at a jewellers which offers some peace of mind

having said that they are pricey but they have a good selection and you can negotiate them down quite a bit if you call them up ;)

If you know what you are looking for a fake won't fool you on eBay
Each to their own I guess but I wouldn't pay watch finder prices

you obviously havent seen any good fakes . because even very experienced watch enthusiasts and some jewellers are taken in by them .

im not taking aboout the 10 euro ones some lad trys to sell you on a beach more the 200-500euro ones that dependant on the watch use the same movement as the original in them .

there are numerous articles about this even showing the 2 watches side by side and you genuinely cannot tell the difference from a picture . in the flesh yes if you really know what your looking at but not from a pic

Trust me I know what I'm looking for
I've been dealing in watches for 20 years, and only bought one fake tag Heuer link which was a very good fake it I couldn't be sure from the pictures, but the signs were there on close inspection and I sent it back.
If you can't tell a fake from a real watch them it's best not to be looking online for a second hand one as far as I'm concerned

    ok

    Okay

    :nods:

Amount of seikos with modern dials/hands and chapter rings claiming to be genuine, vintage is stupid.

Aye and another reason why I prefer the older and odder stuff and yet another reason I started moving into the early electronic stuff a few years back(good luck faking an UltraQuartz or Beta 21).

I've seen some fakes that would have easily fooled me depending on context. EG if I saw one stuffed down the back of a pile of junk at a market stall kinda thing. Vintage Rolex is a minefield, where even the company themselves won't go out on a limb to say real or not. Heuer had worst records than Stock Aiken & Waterman. Certain Omega vintages are faked to a silly degree.

The newer stuff isn't much better. As you say the fakes have become very very close to the real deal. Which for me brings up the old question; if they're so near identical, why am I paying a premium in the many many thousands of beer tokens? Though it's not quite at the stage of clothing high fashion fakes, where in one Italian faking case they could spot the Mafia stuff, because it was more finely made and stitched than the "real deal". :D

If I was in the market for nearly new today? Yeah I'd go to a dealer for the peace of mind(unless it was a model I knew extremely well and could get under the bonnet to check). At least if it did turn out to be spurious I'd have some comeback.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
