My wife has left her job to care for our son. Is it possible to claim JB whilst waiting for carer's allowance application to be inevitably rejected and having to resubmit?

no because she's not available and actively looking for work. Can she apply for Carer's Benefit ?

Is your sick child over 16? If your sick child is not over 16 then your wife can't get CA for him unless she has applied for Domicillary Care Allownce first.
Regarding JSB she will have to talk to your local SW/INTREO office as she has both left work voluntarily (although with good reason if her child is sick) and is not available or looking for work.
Chat to them and they will do their best for her.

Child is 3, we've applied for DCA. Their processing time is ridiculously long(14 weeks at last check) and they always reject first time.
Will speak to SW to see what they say. Problem will probably be that they reckon my income is too high. Although between mortgage and other expenses, we're eating through savings :(

Just want to point out that if your wife has been employed for at least 8 weeks in the last 6 months before she stopped work then it is not too late for her to apply for Carers Benefit which if she has enough PRSI, she would be entitled to
She was also entitled to Carers Leave which means that instead of giving in her notice she could have had up to 104 weeks off to care for your son and been returned to her original job if she wanted too

Did you see my latest post? For Carers benefit she didn't need DCA. It's not too late. Carers benefit is not means tested
DCA doesn't always refuse first time. If your child has diabetes etc it is approved within 3 to 4 weeks every time
Your outgoings mortgage etc are not taken into account
You need to go to either your local SW office or speak to an information officer at the citizens information service to get proper advice

DCA is definitely not always rejected first time - I know this from very recent experience of a family member applying for it.

Anyway, it is not possible to claim JSB while waiting on an application for Carer's Allowance. One of the conditions for JSB is you are available and looking for full time work. Carer's allowance conditions allow only up to 15 hours work. They are contradictory conditions, which is why you cannot claim in the interim.
