Im buying a musical instrument in the US that cannot be sourced in Europe.

From what i understand I will need to pay VAT @ 21% on this & import duty may or may not be due, as it depends on the item.

The only place there is a duty calculator is the pitney bowes site, but i have to pay for credits to use it!

Just wondering if anyone can advise:

    - is there duty on musical instruments?
-if so can anyone advise what the rate for the duty is?

    Thanks

You might have to pay VAT AND Duty depending, ask the shipper for the commodity code

    VAT is 23%.

Depends on the instrument - string instruments are 3.2%. Duty paid on cost of instrument + shipping cost and then VAT of 23% on total (incl duty). For example, instrument costs 500 + shipping costs of 100 = 600 * 3.2% = 19.20 Duty. Then VAT = 619.20 * 23% = 142.42

Don't forget to convert everything to Euro :)

    Hope that helps
