for an open slurry pit which is a better agitator to have. Pump or propeller? Have 110hp 6 cylinder to drive it.

I have a pump and contractor believes the new propellor type would be better in my lagoon. Never got him to try it yet but if I had just to mix a lagoon I would buy a Mix-it slurry whisk from the UK. About 60% the price of a pump and seriously impressive on YouTube built by a farmer contractor for 20yrs+. And very nice guy to discuss your mixing problems.
But pump is versatile re tank, lagoon, moving slurry from one tank to other. The whisks of yesteryear were for 70hp tractors these can be specified up to 150hp propellor

The propeller type is better if you don't agitate that often because grass rushes and other vegetation will grow on top and block a pump agitator every few minutes if the roots get big enough.
The propeller type won't block but it won't pump either if you need to move slurry through pipes.

well I only have one tank so it will only need to agitate that tank. not move it from tank to tank.

are the pup agitators faster in general? or is it just that they do a better job agitating?

IMO the pump one is for a slatted tank because it's tidy enough to fit in a small agitation point and won't have grass growing on the crust
The propeller type is for outdoor uncovered tanks and lagoons where the light causes grass rushes etc to grow on the crust
They both do a good job in the right place the pump for a long narrow slatted tank and propeller for a wide open tank.
The pump will work in open tank aswell once you don't allow too much vegetation to grow between uses

progressing cavity pumps are ideal for slurries really, I don't know much about agitators on slurry. If you're just circulating slurry a PC pump is fine for that and transfer of same.

Propeller works better in an open pit imo. Quicker to break up the lumps.

how big is the tank? I think there is a limit to propeller type.

The Mix-it cost a little over £2000 stg plus vat and delivery of about 250. I will be buying one. Took 2 pumps working together to get mine moving this spring.

Propeller is better for outdoor lagoon. It will handle grass, plastic, twine, timber, etc. They do get into it despite best efforts.

I was thinking about getting my own agitator for my lagoon when I saw this. Did a bit of research on the Mixit. Ended up buying one. Just got it going today. Seriously impressive machine in a big lagoon. Borrowed an ordinary propeller also, reckon need about 3 of them going to match the Mixit.
Thanks to st1979 for the tip, would never have heard about them otherwise.

what type tractor have you driving it? is it power hungry?

It has detachable impellers. He has 3 sizes 80-140hp, 160 + 200, although his website says different. I have the smallest one on a TS110 (110hp). Yes it is power hungry. When at 2100 rpm it will drop to 1800 when fully in the slurry. And this slurry is really dirty water. I had my tractor on an borrowed ordinary propeller (think NC) and it could run at 2100 fully submerged, but not really doing anything. The difference between the two is night and day and has to be seen to be appreciated. If I had 140hp on it I could get more out of it. Could also be run at 1000 if had the power. But I reckon the slurry would be blown out over the tank if you did that :D Able to get a 25x36M tank of mostly water rotating in a circle.

The Mixit does not have reverse. the serious thrust and ability to mix any thickness of crust with the auger helping makes it un-necessary. the three impeller cover the range of 70-200hp - you choose. the impellers can be swopped in 1 minute without tools. they do not cavitate, unlike most 3 blade impellers.

he is also exhibiting a lagoon whisk at the ploughing match
see mixitstirrers.co.uk for full details of models.
