I recently cut my links with Virgin Media cable TV - poor service, too many drop-outs. They don't want the old silver cable TV box back and told me to dump it. Can it be put to any other use, e.g. is there a hard disk in it that could be used?

If it's the size of a VCR/DVD player and was able to record programs then there is a hard disk in it but it's probably past it at this stage because that disk was spinning for every minute the machine was switched on and I wouldn't risk installing it as a backup drive in a desktop/tower PC or use it in an enclosure as an external drive. There is a possibility that there is firmware onboard which prevents it from being formatted for Windows or in a Mac.

If it's the small Pace box (typically used in the bedroom) then no, there is no hard drive in it and it's completely useless for anything. Drop it into the recycling bin next time you're in Power City or DID.
