application deadline question

Applied for a job and wasn't selected for interview and rang for feedback as to why not - they said application was late. I clearly remember the advert had a date but no time frame. Secretary indicated on phone it would have been "close of business" but that wasn't clear on this particular advert although I have come across other ad's that say 5pm or whatever. In this instance what would you consider close of business for a school to be? Should the advert not have stated the time? I'm peeved obviously about it but presume I just have to suck it up :-(

At this time of the year, the job was probably already gone. When applying for jobs, I always try to apply as soon as ad is posted because 1. It will be in the school in plenty of time and 2. In case I forget. Schools pull some tricks at this time of year - got an edposts email for a job last week but when you read the extra information it says that the ability to teach DCG and Construction is desirable. I've been in lots of schools and have never seen a language and woodwork/DCG teacher. It was just a sly way for the school to advertise the post without getting applications because no-one with those subjects would be notified as it was listed for the language and anyone looking at the website wouldn't bother looking at the post after looking at the subject. You might be better off not working for that school - it's a long summer yet so just let it go and concentrate on getting a job in a nicer school. Best of luck.

I would guess when the school closed the answer is in your question.

What time did you get it in by? What time did the school close?

If a shop closed at 9pm what time would you consider close of business to be for them?

Would like to see text of ad before commenting.
However, it has always been the case of dicing with danger if you leave it to the last minute to send in the application form.
Do you seriously think that An Post can guarantee next day delivery? (In fairness they may not be able to achieve this for several reasons).
Forget about it and move on........ there are 10 weeks to the beginning of school year '16/'17.

It was send by email so not an post job. Only date not time given in advert with a very short time frame from the ad going up to closing date. I worked on the application forms over a couple of nights as currently only working off my phone's mobile data which is a pain. But I thought I was okay to send that night - now it was probably about 8/9 once the kids were in bed and yes it wasn't ideal I accept that but it's just a technical point I was annoyed about - I've seen adverts where they clearly state by 12 noon or 5 pm but this advert did not.

I don't mean to sound harsh but in all seriousness you can't blame the school for this one. As much as some schools are playing silly buggers with some adverts, this one advertised, according to you, in by close of business (which even if it didn't say that everyone would presume anyway) 8 or 9pm is well after that. School not at fault here

See that's what I'm asking - what is "close of business " for a school? 3.30/4.00/5.00/what about a day they usually have a half day? What about at the moment when school might go on later than usual for exams? I'm just being pedantic this evening :-)

It's probably 5 pm. However I have noticed a few ad's that wanted them by 12 lunchtime. If unknown aim for the day before by email. 2-3 days by post.
Better luck for the next one:)

Happywithlife I have no doubts they are pulling at straws and would not have given you the job anyway. You are teaching longer than me and mark what more could they want? The job was obviously meant for someone else :(

Maybe they wanted someone who can follow an instruction (happywithwife not having a go at you)

Seriously I know there are some out there that pull a fast one but you can't blame the school for this one. Schools get hundreds of applications for jobs and set criteria to follow to narrow that down. One would always be in before or after a deadline.

All I see on boards is people coming on blaming all the nasty principals, how oh sure the job is gone, oh the successful person knew someone on the BOM. Etc etc etc I read one somewhere recently where the add said by post but someone wanted to moan about how it was wrong that they weren't able to hand it into the office.

People need to grow up a bit and take responsibility for things sometimes it's not always somebody else's fault (happywithwife not directed at you specifically)

Sometimes schools specify the application must be made by post. Strange that they were willing to accept email without stating time of closure.
In any case you are grasping at straws by leaving it very late and then hoping all would be fine.
