Road sign query

Hi. I'm hoping someone will be able to answer my query.

I've noticed new road signage recently while commuting in Dublin.

These new signs are approximately 40cm x 40cm, primarily reflective amber in colour with a think black exterior border and a roughly 20cm x 20cm black square in the centre. The design is square and symmetrical.

I've noticed them near roundabouts and light controlled junctions on the outer ring road in Dublin. They are mounted on their own pole in isolation but also affixed to larger permanent road signage.

I haven't come across them before and judging by the way they are mounted they look to be official, rather than signage for a local building project or the likes. I contacted the RSA on the off chance they might know but they referred me to Transport Infrastructure Ireland but have not had any reply as of yet.

Any ideas? I don't have a picture unfortunately.

They're diversion signs. The initial sign will have the destination with the shape assigned to it, you follow that shape to get to your destination.
Going the opposite way will have a different shape.

Thanks for that. Doesn't seem like the most intuitive system considering how small the signs are. Cheers.
