The apartment block I live in now has Sky Apartment (Shared dish). My question is, can I plug the coaxial line into a free view box or does there need to be a splitter box installed? I just want to take advantage of the free view feed.

Yes you can plug it in but whether the actual cables are all live to the dish or only become live after you subscribe to Sky is another story.

Be aware that FreeView is the brand name of the UK terrestrial system similar to Saorview and nothing to do with satellite. What you need is a FreeSat or Free-To-Air (FTA) satellite box.
