Volvo s40 gear problem

    Any ideas?
I have a Volvo s40 with about 190km. I always have difficulty getting into 1st & 2nd from cold.....5mins later and it slips in with no resistance at all and drives perfectly. I had to replace the "gear cable" recently as it snapped. The 2 garages I brought it to couldn't figure it out. Thanks in advance!

Might worth a shot to change the gearbox oil. I am not familiar with the model so can`t comment on the selector cables, whether they adjustable or not, but the symptoms you describe can be caused by cold, old oil.

Thanks for that might be a good starting point! It would seem to make sense too.

Is it possible that someone changed the gear oil and used the wrong (too thick) grade? This would cause the described symptoms.

I don't think so but I'll change it to be sure. I can only describe it as a "notchy" feeling as you move the gear stick into 1st or 2nd from cold. It has to be out of action over night....I.e. any residual heat and it works perfectly and slips into gear. Just a weird one....my worry is that the cable will snap again @ roughly 500 quid!
