    Hi,
We'd like to switch from Sky to a free to air service (i.e. saorview and the free to air English channels)

Is it possible to receive both of these services on the same box?

We are in the North Galway are ...

    Thanks

You already have the satellite dish, the old Sky box should receive the UK programmes. You will need an aerial, and if you have a Saorview approved TV you are set. Better to replace the Sky box with a combo and you have it all in a single box.

    Great - thanks for that.

Any particular combo boxes you would recommend?

So, the sky dish will pick up the free to air UK channels and I need another aerial for the Irish channels ?

Sky box will have all FTA channels and aerial for saorview. For combo boxes check threads:

Irish channels are NOT free on the UK satellites so you will need a conventional aerial to pick up the Irish (Saorview) signals. If your TV is Saorview compatible that may suffice. The combo box combines the aerial and satellite signals so you can have them in one listing. If there are 2 cables coming from your existing dish make sure to buy a combo with 2 satellite and 1 terrestrial tuner. The idea of the 2 satellite feeds is to allow you to record one channel while watching another.

Combo boxes are fine for watching TV or recording while you are out. You'll have to retune every few months.

If you want the full feature set like EPG, Series link, recording programs while watching others then for UK you need a better box.

A proper Freesat box does the UK channels, and all the good stuff like series link and auto re-tuning , but it won't do any of the Irish Saorview ones , though in fairness most of the stuff on TV3 and UTV is on Freesat anyway. So you'd need a saorview box or the TV's tuner to see the Irish channels.

It's possible to get a Linux receiver that will do the above and receive Irish channels but it's a lot more hands on, though sometimes that's more interesting that what's on the box.
