Fella servicing the gas boiler over at the mother in laws says the hot water tank is ready to fail.
He told her he knows because it has a green ring at the bottom.
    Any truth to this?

    Thanks

He's probably not wrong. That's a good old fashioned cylinder too. When cylinders were actually made of copper, not some cheap crap alloy you get today. If you are going to change it, id recommend you get a grade 2 cylinder.

That's where it's starting to go porous.

    Not a great sign alright

Happened me last year, lucky wasn't away on holidays at the time. My one started leaking over a weekend and the first we knew of it was a wet floor. Plumber took most of a day to replace, new one has that moulded lagging on it. It definitely gave a lot more hot water. Cost for the labour and cylinder was €500. ( it was like the one in BF 's photo, with a green line in parts, probably a sign that it was really leaking for some time )
