I applied for learner permit on Friday. I know 'officially' its up to 8 working days.
Can anyone tell me if they were waiting that long. Have first lesson provisionally booked for next Sunday but I'm thinking now I mightn't have the license by then

I went to add the car onto my learner permit the Thursday before last and they told me ten working days. When I got the tractor permit last year I think I got it a few days early so Tbh you might just get It on time. Maybe Friday but don't hold your breath.

I'd think it possible but very unlikely, tbh. I'd be prepared to take a rain check on the lesson for now but if I were you, I'd ring the NDLS helpline on maybe Thursday and they can tell you if and when the card had been issued for printing. If it's been processed and issued, they should also be able to estimate when you could expect to receive it but all in all, I'd say the safe thing is be prepared to postpone the lesson.

Its taking really long to get a card back.

My learning permit took 2 months believe it or not...(applied aprox. Feb).
Now, just submitted the full license appl. last Monday...lets see how long it will take this time.

This should not be usual. I hope. But had to call them several times to finally get it posted.
Its just to show how this can vary.

You know I thought that because the NDLS site says if you are stopped by gardai to have your receipt and the guards will give u 10 days to bring it in. I wonder why he text me saying I need the permit before he'll give me a lesson

    That's not the case.

Was there a discrepancy on your application? The NDLS are under contract to get them out in a reasonable time.

By law, you're required to carry a licence or permit with you at all times. The receipt may satisfy a guard the majority of the time but it is at their discretion whether or not to pursue this because you are actually breaking the law by not carrying your permit. I think your instructor is just being extra careful.

8th working day here, postman just passed by and nothing. I think NDLS has serious problems in terms of commitment.

If you don't get it tomorrow, you could call them and see what's going on. It could be a holdup in printing but at least you'd know it's on the way.

I applied for my 1st full just before lunch on Thursday 16th in Citywest. The info I got at the time said 5 days to get the license and it arrived in the post this morning (6 working days later). I know it took longer for my learners permit in Feb (8 working days I think).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭irishgirl19

Well it didn't show today anyway. The instructor said I can use the receipt for the first lesson though so happy days there

Applied 13th in Cork and still got nothing.
Called the NDLS and they said that 5 to 8 days is just to process the application and 2 to 5 additional days may be required to get it delivered.... damn joke.

I applied for mine in citywest. I wonder does it make a difference where you apply

No. All nationwide applications arrive at the processing unit by the following morning. Delays will occur as a result of processing, printing or postage hold-ups or combinations of all. The postal service lose a surprising number also. There can also be hold-ups such as the processing unit finding an error in the documents but this usually results in longer delays as applications go to the back of the queue after the customer is contacted.

Why not use registered post instead? Its an important document.
