Documents for Russia

Hi, we're going to Russia for 10 days in August and seem to have run into a problem. We have our visas to get into the country, but now realise that we need something called 'registration' to leave. Apparently hotels in Russia would normally sort this out, but we're staying in private apartments in both Saint Petersburg and Moscow so not sure how to obtain it. I read that you need to get it sorted within three days of arrival so I asked the owner of the first apartment but she doesn't seem to be well informed on the paperwork needed for people from Ireland. Any help much appreciated.

Do you mean the letter of invitation? I found any of the rental companies issued that. Perhaps the person in your second rental can do it. They can put whatever date they want on it.

Are you sure it's not an invitation? I needed one when I went a few years ago. Stayed in an apartment in Moscow and the owner sorted it no problem for me. Forgot the exact details of it now but was far easier than getting the actual visa. Enjoy, both cities are fantastic and such an experience.

Thanks for the replies. No it's not the invitation. It's this thing below. Still working on it.

Once you have a visa you don't need an invitation, because you need the invitation in the first place to get your visa.
The registration needs to be done on arrival to Russia by your hosts or whoever issued your invitation. If the invitation is done by a private individual then the registration is done by them. They can do this nowadays at a post-office. There's a couple of forms that need to be filled out and they're likely to ask for a copy of the hosts and your passports. They then unregister you when you leave, but you keep a docket off the registration letter for your exit passport check. If they've never heard of this process, get them to check this at the post-office or their local registration office where they'd normally go when they change address, as every citizen is registered somewhere and would know how/where this is done.
