NCT & tyres question

    Hi Guys,

I have a TT going through the NCT tomorrow, the back left tyre is a little bit worn and I am not sure if it's passable (it's either just above OR just below 1.6mm :o )

I have 4 good tyres on my daily A4.

My questions is, could I just swap the the 2 back wheels or should I swap all 4?

FYI wheels on A4 are 16" , wheels on TT are 18"

The reason I ask is (a) because it's Quattro and i'm not sure if the different sized wheels will have an adverse effect and (b) will 2 different wheels on the back look dodgy and make the tester think I'm chancing my arm and thus encourage him to fail me on something else.

    Cheers

I wouldn't bother. Just put it through. If it passes it passes, if not just replace the tyre.

If they're different sizes then I'd say you'd have to change all four. There's a guy in my local who told me himself and two friends have one good set of tyres between them and they just slap them on for the NCT and take them off again :(

    Terrible carry on.

I'm not sure, I think as long as they are the same size per axle it should be ok which I guess is what I'm trying to confirm?

I presume it would have to be seeing as many different cars have bigger wheels on the back compared to the front? ... just not sure whether it would damage the Quattro system and whether is would turn the tester against me :P

They probably think they are being ultra schmart getting around the NCT "money racket", the mind boggles on what value people put on their lives, they probably blow more on a weekend in booze than 4 good tyres would cost

Why not just put the 4 of them on it, no risk to the Haldex that way

    Double the effort :D

(I probably will to err on the side of caution but am just curious whether I could just actually change 2)

A lot more effort if you damage the tremendously expensive quattro bits..

Not sure if it effects Haldex without googling it but I wouldn't mess with different circumferences on an awd, different widths would be no problem..

I know you say the wheels are 16 and 18 inch but what are the tyre sizes and so the outer tyre diameters.
    For example 215 60r16 have outer diameter of 66cm; 260 40r18 have 65cm;
Now I've just picked these size to demonstrate this, the 18's in your case may be bigger but worth considering. I would be bit wary given its a quattro mind.

In general with a Four Wheel drive the rolling radius of the front and back wheels must be the same otherwise it puts pressure on the center differential. The rolling radius is the distance from the center of the wheel to the road surface, so different wheel and tire combinations can have the same rolling radius.

Indeed. That's not the first time I've heard it either. Cousins of mine down in Longford told me of the local farmers doing the same thing. God knows what other schemes people think up to get around things.

just get a new tyre? It either needs one now or very soon, so save a possible re-test fee

I knew one of my tyres was a bit dodge. Put it through last week, the tyre failed, bought a new one and then just went back for the quick free re-check.

There is plenty of the NCt that I think is nonsense, but the tyres are fair enough. It's the most important part of my car, and I tend not to skimp or cut corners with my tyres.

Swap all 4. The haldex system is very sensitive to rolling circumference differences. I had an s3, same set up as your TT presuming it's a mk1 TT. The spare that came with it was a 225/50/17 while all the other wheels were 225/45/17 and that threw the whole system out diff began to whine immediately so replaced the tyre and all was fine again. For your own safety and peace of mind just replace the tyre.

Some very fair points. Think ill just put it through as it is.

Tyre fail is a Visual retest isnt it??

    Yes visual.

    What year is the TT?

    If it's a mk1 TT the A4 wheels won't fit it.
    A4 is 5x112, early TT is 5x100.

You will pick up a decent tyre for 80 quid for a TT, kinda madness not really if it's near limit

Yeah but I want to pick up a matching tyre... which wont happen by tomorrow ;)

Do test, if it passes great if it fails it's just a free visual at your own convienience and buy a matching one off camskill and have in 4 days.

I put two Kumhos on the 275 wheels i had for back of 535d as the previous owner put a set of 245 front wheels on the back and it handled like a dog because of it.

Slightly off topic but didnt want to start a new thread.
My car has 16 inch wheels, my spare was damaged and i was struggling to get a wheel as the car usually had 15s but my model came with 16s as an extra when new.
Ive gotten a wheel off a friend but it turned out to be a 15inch. Is that ok to use as a spare? Dunno why but im wary of it. Dont know much about these things. My usual wheels are alloys so if its ever needed it would just be for a few days till i get a repair but that could be 2/300 miles.
Am i overthinking as usual lol?
    Cheers.

    Update:

Flew through the NCT but failed only on the tyre in question!

Free Visual so I'm delighted :D

Will the NCT cert be 1 year from today or from the date I show up for the visual retest?

Neither. It'll be one year from the anniversary of first registration of the car.

No it wont? That changed. It receives a 1 year cert from whenever it passes.

If the car is done earlier than 90 days before its due it's then due a year from the date test took place, if it's after due date it's a year from due date.

I think if it's within 90 days of being a year overdue you get a year from the due date.

Did it? When was that and do you have a link to the information?

No it didnt, it'll be the same date as the one that expired, but a year later.

In short, yes it's fine. But your handling will be way off so bare that in mind.
A spare wheel is really just to get you home or to a garage so you shouldn't be doing that mileage on a spare anyway.

In short, no it may not be fine. It depends on the rolling radius, as mentioned above.
