My Nexus 7 needs replacing. Looking for something similar with a budget of €150 max. Would appreciate any suggestions ?

Nexus 7 Wifi 2013 is only €135 in Argos. Buy a new one.

Is google even still updating the Nexus 7?

Yes, a freiend of mine bought 2 of these last week. On power on it said a 10MB update was available. When he installed that update it then pulled down the latest MM 6.01 update for the Nexus 7 2013, so they are still supporting at least up to MM.

I haven't taken an update on the kids 2013 models, after an update effectively bricked my 2012 model. One of the kids dropped their one the other day - I'm also finding the 2013 still seems to be the best bang for the buck out there, but I'm happy to be pointed in a different direction. How is the 2013 doing with that update? Any lag?

Nope, I'm running 6.01 and its as fast as it was new out of the box even though its nearly 3 years old now.

Think the one I have is 2012. Running 5.1.1.
Was doing my head in, very slow and unresponsive.
Just did a factory reset so will see what difference it makes.

I never really solved it - tried everything within that version. Limiting processes to 3 was about the best I managed, but it's been on my list a while to attempt a roll back to a different version.

The 2012 version was known to crawl after some particular update, maybe lollipop?

I had one of the old Nexus 7's but going on the price & quality for Nexus 7 2013 - is that the best at that price? Am thinking of getting it, as need to replace my old Nexus 7.

+1 Same here, never had a problem with performance. Battery capacity has diminished over time but it never leaves the house so not a big deal. Would certainly consider replacing it with the same model if there wasn't a similar model available in the same price range.

Yeah the storage device in the 2012 model was brutal and any version of Android from 5.0 onwards killed it. Sometimes after a fresh install everything would speed along fine but after a few days you were experiencing freezes and long loading times. I tried a lot of different roms and none could solve the issue.

I've put a 4.4.4 slim rom on there and it works great. Kids use it for plex and a few games (with display settings set to minimum). Not bad for a 4 year old device.

Back to the main topic: nexus 7 2013 may not get officially updated to N but marshmallow should keep you going for 2 or 3 years easily. And the xda community will surely develop N roms for it. If you want a more powerful tablet the Nvidia shield k1 can be picked up pretty cheaply. It's seen as the modern equivalent of the nexus 7; powerful yet cheap.

A 2012 version flashed with an older version of Cyanogen is the way to go.

I have the 2012 and it's on 6.01 pure nexus with parrot mod installed and it's as quick as 4.4.4. You need to flash parrot mod to make the difference tho.

It's a serious bit of kit tho and Nvidia are really good about updating it.

We went for the Nexus 7 2013 in the end to replace the broken one. Ultimately it does what the children want (minecraft and youtube for minecraft videos!) and appears to be the best bang for the buck, particularly in bricks and motar stores. Still nervous about taking the upgrade after what happened to my 2012 model tbh though!
