I've seen a car I really like , 2011 1.6TDCI but the 345,000km on the clock is putting me off. It has full service history and new NCT.

Should I avoid or do diesel engines really run forever ??

1.6 TDCI is a Ford, or a Mazda, I'm guessing?

It's the 1.6Hdi engine used in Peugeot and Citroën cars. At that mileage, I'd probably pass tbh. They are a contrary bloody engine at that mileage :D

Ye, Mondeo. It's going for a great price, I'm presuming because of the mileage and I'm wondering should I snap it up or steer clear

I'd stick around for a few more opinions. Though from me personally, I'd pass. I haven't worked on one in a Mondeo, but I have in other Fords, Mazdas, Peugeots, Citroën, Volvos and even Minis - they're in them all.
You'd think it was because they were reliable and easy to work on... :(

PITA to work on. And prone to needing to be worked on regularly with age/mileage.
But they are powerful and some of the most fuel efficient engines going, so I can see the initial manufacturer selling point..

The 1.6tdci has a good enough reputation. All diesel engines are not equal, some are not good at all. If the service history is good and the price is right then maybe. Get someone who knows what they are at to give it a good inspection.

Might stick with what I have which also happens to be a Mondeo but 2007. It's running great and has never given me any trouble so have no need to get rid but saw an opportunity to go up a few years at a good price.

Yer probably going up in mileage too! :D
It's over 200,000 miles, which is rather leggy for that year.
If I'm not mistaken, unless it's been done for the sale, it'll be due a timing belt (last I knew, it was every 180,000km) at it's next service, at 360,000km, so I imagine you'll want to factor that in too. And though the drive train passsed, it owes no one anything at this stage, either.

I'd hold out myself, and keep adding away to the sum you've got going for the car, and wait till a 5 year old one with a more average mileage comes up. Say, around 100,000km.

It would want to come with a full service history from new and be at a really good price.

Depends if it is 8V or something earlier with 16 valves. The 8V version is much better - and they got introduced around 2011...

I think they only every put the 8v in the Mondeo.

Taking into consideration the high mileage of the car and the garage's past history (a simple google search shows feedback such as this (http://dublinreviews.net/quay-west-cars-dublin/)) I'd be staying away.

For interest sake, whats your budget & requirements for a car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,871 ✭✭✭Karen23

To be honest I wasn't really looking to buy a car at the moment but just came across this one and thought it was an deal I couldn't pass.

Even if the car had half the mileage it has, I would walk away after reading those reviews. I've heard too many horror stories of people buying cars cheap off shady dealers. Spend a while getting finances together and then come up a few more years.

A lot of these del boy type outfits are just one step up from the cut and shut boys.

    Serviced every 10k km

Find it hard to believe it was serviced 34 times. Its a risky purchase but it could be in great condition. If they are legit motorway miles it will essentially have only been in 6th gear cruising for most of its life. It could be in better mechanical condition than a car with 100k km of country driving

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    +1

For €5k or thereabouts it could well be a great buy, but I would have it thoroughly checked by a good mechanic. And budget for a timing belt job to be done straight away.

Don't think I'd be bothered taking such a gamble for the sake of a couple of years jump especially given that you've no issues with your current car..

You could be walking into a whole heap of trouble while trying to fix something that isn't broken..

Worst of all, that mileage will be glaring up at you every time you sit in the car.

High mileage means higher maintenance costs so If your ok with that and ok with the fact that it could go pear shaped then go for it. Something tells me you won't get the satisfaction from it though. I'd wait a while, save another few bob and get something you're really happy with..
