Replace Vodafone Router

    I need some advice please.

My parents have Vodafone fibre broadband which works brilliantly downstairs however upstairs it doesn't reach some of the rooms. Is it possible to replace the Vodafone Router with something a bit better than whats there? My internet in NY was useless and not reaching rooms it should and I just replaced the router with a new model and it was brilliant but is this possible with fibre in Ireland? Excuse my ignorance, 2/3 years ago I would have been answering this question for others but now I'm lost. I have powerline adapters already installed going from the vodafone router to the Sky box (not wifi enabled) but I need to replace that with something neater than adding yet another powerline and router upstairs, I want to keep it as simple and straight forward as possible as I'm not going to be in Ireland to set it up and I'll be the one talking them through the set up over the phone?

If it is possible can someone suggest a good router to replace it with thats not going to cost me an arm and a leg please and thanks!

Tp link archer c9 will work as a direct replacement but will cost

An alternative would be to use powerline extenders with wifi plug it into your vodafone router
push the wps button and sync
bring it upstairs and plug into the mains
and you wif will be extended

OOPS maybe the vodafone hg 658c does not have wps
But you could copy the ssid and pass to the homeplugs

Trying to get the rents through PPPoE setup will be much more difficult then guiding them to plug in two powerlines and press WPS+clone. No keyboards involved. Definitely the better option.

I don't want to use powerlines(if possible) as I already bought expensive Belkin ones which only worked half the time and were a piece of crap in reality. I do have the Vodafone powerlines which are great but not wifi compatible so unless I use them and add something like another router upstairs using the vodafone powerlines, would that work well. The reason I wanted to replace the home one is that it leaves less chances of "things" to fail or break down. I understand the whole setting up the settings once is a pain and I was supposed to do it last month while I was home but if I replaced it with a good router theres less chance of follow up questions from them of why isn't this working and my response being it could be XYZ :P

Well its €100 for a VDSL+G.Vectoring compliant router or €50 for TP Link homplugs with integrated wifi. Bridging is cheaper but harder to setup and not one that you want to go near for a remote site.

Also if you drop the HG658C you cant ask vodafone for any help without swapping back to it.

Using an AP + existing homeplugs is almost as good. I'd buy something like a C20i, connect it via LAN and configure it yourself via Teamviewer/similar. That probably ticks all the boxes for you.

Archer C9 isn't a replacement for the hg658c, it has no modem. It can be bridged though and that's my current setup.

I wouldn't even do that. Another user here is having awful trouble and is using that router. Some routers don't seem to handle vectoring too well.

just wondering what you done with this issue.Vodafone called to my house and said the HG658c couldn't handle all the wireless connections as well as one wired pc. Im struggling to believe what he said.Is there any unit that I can get for a direct replacement for the HG658c ?

Hi - did you ever solve this problem? I have the Vodafone router and really want to replace it with something better as my internet keeps dropping especially between 6 and 8 in the evening. My parents live next door and are with eircom - their internet never drops - do you think I should switch companies?

I just want a plug and play router replacement as I wouldn't have the technical know how to set one up via a computer.

    Any help greatly appreciated

You don't replace the router, you just add a second wifi hotspot to your network. This should be connected to the vodafone router via ethernet cable (or powerline adapters - not as good tho). Make sure only 1 device runs DHCP.

FYI - about internet dropping at peak times, this is because of contention. You can't fix this with a router, but you can switch provider.

Also, there is no "plug and play" for this. You will need to get technical assistance to perform basic network configuration.

Thanks a million for your reply - the internet dropping is my main concern and it makes sense to change and luckily my contract is up soon - great advice - thanks

    Hi guys,
I'm trying to replace my Vodafone modem, it is out of warranty and has started causing network issues.

I bought a TP-Link VR200 but I'm having an awful time getting it working, there's no connection to net. Should I send it back and get another one or is there settings I'm overlooking?

Any recommendations of modems that people have found great for using with Vodafone would be appreciated, preferably dual band.

Hi, just bought a TP-LINK Archer VR400. Vodafone have told me the VDSL login credentials are 'vodafone@vodafone.ie' as the username and 'broadband' as the password but these don't work. After calling up again I was told the password is 'Broadband1' but this also doesn't work. Does anyone have working credentials / any idea what might be wrong?

Are you trying to use vdsl credentials to login to wifi? They are unrelated things.

Specify in detail exactly what you are doing. What settings are you editing? Which boxes are you putting values into?

Keep ringing support and get proper settings off them.

No I'm trying to set up my connection with Vodafone using the VDSL credentials.
    DSL modulation type: VDSL
VLAN ID: 10 (not sure if I need to set this but I found it in another post on here)
    Connection type: PPPoE
    Username: vodafone@vodafone.ie
    Password: broadband (also tried Broadband1)

What client are you using? Pc/laptop? Wifi or ethernet cable? Are there other routers on network? Is DHCP working? Is ethernet cable plugged into correct port?

When you say client do you mean how am I configuring the modem router? If so I am using the built in TP-LINK interface.
    On pc, using ethernet
Nothing else is connected to the modem router except the pc
    DHCP is definitely working
And yes it is plugged into the correct port

I think support gave you the details for adsl config, not for vdsl. Ring them again, but I think they will say they don't support other routers.

Yeah I think they are too but when I said that to the support agent, she said no that's what her supervisor gave her. Currently waiting on a callback from them so I'm going to try again. Yeah they say it every time but yet all I need are the correct credentials, can it really be that difficult for them? Are you with Vodafone yourself?

Yes but I'm still stuck on adsl :) Hopefully I will have this problem next year if more network gets rolled out.

Oh really? That sucks, I thought they had rolled it out to most of the country by now. Hopefully they do soon yeah. I'll let you know what they say when they finally call me back anyway.

So they finally called me back, got a different answer this time after they went and asked their second level of support. Apparently the username is *modem_serial_number*@vodafone.ie and password is broadband, but it also doesn't work. I tried combinations of a few different usernames and passwords but nothing works. Forgot it needs to support vectoring but upon checking the specs it would seem it does. At this stage I'm baffled, have you any ideas?

So just an update, I had a long conversation with a Vodafone moderator on their community support page yesterday here and she was the first person to tell me they aren't allowed to give out VDSL credentials to customers (after 3 different support agents gave me what they believed to be VDSL credentials over the phone. According to her customers are allowed to use third party modems but they just won't give you the credentials.. so therefore cannot use a third party modem. I then asked how they normally deal with customers wanting to use third party routers (around 3pm and replies from her were an average 20-40 minutes apart) and I haven't received a reply since. Don't know what to do now, need to find a compromise with them until my contract is up and I can be rid of them for good.

Find that hard to believe myself,I've a pc wired from router downstairs (up through ceiling)X box,Nvidia shield, his tablet, mine, and both phones,,,no problems, think the VF guy was either inept,or lazy

Will try VLAN 10 a bit later on the IPTV tab. Have already tried it on Internet tab of the D7000.
Voda TV box is either very slow or doesn't recover when things are configured right.
I tried a few reboots earlier but it didn't recover so i got lazy and when I changed stuff it didn't recover.
Put back in the old modem it didn't recover, so it's reboots as a test from now on :-(

In the end what I ended up doing was using the two powerlines and changing the settings in an eir fibre modem to rebroadcast the signal. It worked perfectly and was probably the most cost efficient way of doing it. I have also changed settings in an old Vodafone fibre modem for a friend to do the same thing and works perfectly for them too. That might be an idea for someone with old modems lying around
