NCT question - brakes and discs

    Hi,

Just a quick one - do NCT testers check the condition of your discs and pads? Got some work done on car recently and garage said discs and pads need doing but brakes work fine.

Do they physically check them or just test the brakes on a rolling road?

    Thanks

They test the brakes on a rolling road and tell you the brake efficiency as a percentage taking into account the weight of the car.

Yea they check, i failed on front brake pads and discs this year despite the fact the jeep has been declared off the road all year and only driven 20 km since the previous test

They can aslo visually check the discs and pads for wear. Discs which are badly pitted or scored or worn beyond their minimum thickness can also result in a fail as can pads with little or no material left.

The garage may have been giving a heads up that the discs and pads will need replacing sooner rather than later.

If there's nothing otherwise wrong with them and the brakes pass on braking force, balance and ovality they should be ok for the NCT but will probably need to be done sooner rather than later.

Have in mind that if brake pads go down to the metal you might need to also replace the discs ftom the damage.

probably the lack of use is the cause here, you would have been better off to drive it round for a bit before the test.
