If I become a sole trader, give up my current job (basic low scale predictions leave me with the same income) and things don't work out, is there any support from SW or elsewhere until I find a new job.

I was only recently made redundant and took the first job offered. Is it the case that once you start by yourself, you lose all of your stamps.

You can sign on for jobseekers benefit and apply for short term enterprise allowance straight away. You would retain you benefit payment for the duration of the claim without your self employment affecting it. Once your benefit exhausts you can then apply for jobseekers allowance and be means tested from your self employment.
