Hi all, thinking about a change, and these e220cdi Mercs from 2003 and 2004 look attractive. One for sale near me for 3000 euro, 150k on the clock.
    Any owners on here?
Any known faults to look for?
A mate tells me to check for weeps around the injectors, but is there much else needs watching for?
Looks like lots of car for Golf money.

There are some holes in this logic. literally

They have a fancy sbc breaking system that can cause expensive problems.

Early years of that model were known for electrical problems and patchy build quality (I can see the base of the driver's seat is broken in that one). Might be cheap as a Golf to buy now but don't count on it being as cheap to fix.

In another year that is a scrapper, it's cheap for a reason. As mentioned the sbc braking system if that gets troublesome the best thing is a gallon of diesel and a match.

Sbc 2k plus to replace. But a post 2006 Faclift. Sbc gone then.

Big boat of a rear wheel drive car, be interesting on these Cavan roads in winter :(

Sister had one and it near broke them with repairs, said it wasn't that nice on juice either. Hers may have been 05' but same model I think.

Ah, had a succession of W124 models, 260, 280, 300-24v and a 300D so size wouldn't worry me. But might be best to hold out till finances improve and go for a newer one.

That sbc was a disaster for merc spent millions developing it and had to ditch it after a few years.

Just to add to the debate :)

I have a 03 320 with 261,000 miles. It runs perfectly and I've never had any issues with it. Comfortable car to drive with great power and great mpg (average 47mpg).

I bought it with a full MB service history (which was key).

Everyone will tell you this was a bad period for MB in terms of quality (and they're right), but it's still one of the best cars I've owned. It really depends on the one you buy, and the owner who had it before you.

P.s. the replacement rear lights would put me off that particular car. You want one that has been driven gently by an older gent/lady :)

Brought it for a spin yesterday. Good acceleration, thought perhaps it wasnt going into top. Would 2750 rpm at 65 be normal?
All steering whee and dash l controls worked. Road noise higher than I expected to find. Strange that the seat backrest and height is el. But forward/back is manuAL.

With the tip-tronic gear change you can limit it to a lower gear. You could play around with to see if it's changing okay.
