Holidays and long runs

    Hi all ,

I am on holidays for a couple of weeks shortly - I am doing the Berlin marathon in September . I always run on holidays so ok with that part but not keen on long runs - too long , too warm, too hard to map , not compatible with a lot of wine!

Scheduled to do 25k on the first weekend and 20k on the second . Going on a Monday so will have done 22k the weekend before going?

The plan jumps to 27k the weekend I get back so that will be a 5k jump.

Anybody got any suggestions tha doesn't involve me running 25 ks on my holidays?

    Please help
    Thanks
    BS

Run a couple of 15kms runs back to back, after 6pm one evening and early the next morning.

I quite like that idea apart from the early morning part but if it has to be done! Cheers

Two early nights without vino wont destroy your holiday. Up @ 6 out @ 6:30 bring money for water out and back home 8:30 to 9.

Maybe try to do one in the early hours as suggested above and push the second one out to the day you get back or day after?

Fraid it wouldn't make me a hero - I'm always the one up for croissants anyway so they expect it!

Thanks Anna ,My initial thoughts were similar maybe I could do a 10 miler away to keep it ticking over and do the 25 k the day after I get back which is a Tuesday and wait till Sunday to do the 27k. Maybe too much !

Don't mind the no vino thing it's the Thoughts of getting up at 6 on holidays !!! I'd normally run in the evenings away or do a a shorter run in the mornings and get up at 8!!!

No way I could get away with a bucket load of 10k tempo runs instead?

Hope there are decent routes now !

I will have to think of a way to trick my buddy into doing it with me . We could go for a 5k and get "lost".

Push the 20k forward one day and do it the day after you get home (or even that evening). In my experience if your somewhere hot, then mornings are best - it can still be quite warm until late in the evening. You just have the 25k to worry about. It's just one day so one early night and do a bit of exploring and sightseeing. As someone else said grab breakfast on your way back for everyone.

Just think, when you're in danger of hitting the wall in Berlin, you'll be able to say to yourself... I was tough enough to do 25k in the heat at 6 am on my holidays, I got this! :D

Sure what else will you be doing ?!:D holidays means you have loads of time to run, make the most of it...

Get out early, get the job done and the vino will taste even better after.

Alternative is you wont do it and it'll be nagging away at you. If you don't hit your target in Berlin you'll be thinking "if only I'd done that long run on holidays"!!!

I am off in a few weeks, it will be hot but its a nice place to run.

Will do the following sessions per week:

    5 x 1,000
    40 min tempo
    10 mile run

Will do it early in the morning.

when i'm on holidays & the vino is flowing, i'd prefer to do LSR than Tempo any day, agree with beepbeep do back to back runs, late in the evening & first thing in the morning, easy way to keep the mileage up

On this one we agree 100%! Holidays are a great opportunity to push the boat out running wise. All the recovery time gives an opportunity to do some great runs.

Personally, I love to explore the locality, particularly the opportunity for long trail runs. Opencyclingmaps is a great resouce for finding potential routes, due to the quality of the countour mapping and the amount of trails marked.

Have a look at the local maps decide the routes, get up way too early, get out and run, get lost, find yourself and get lost again, run far further than you intended too, get fresh bread/pastries/coffee, get back and everyone is still asleep, bore everyone with how great you feel etc etc etc

    Don't over think things.

If the schedule of the holiday allows you to fit in a run then go and do a run and see what happens. Getting fixated on not having done session X or having completed a long run of Y miles at Z pace so therefore thinking you'll miss the target marathon in three months time is not going to do you or the people you are on holiday with any good.

Your on holiday, just be on holiday and see what happens. One week of missing some sessions won't make the slightest bit of difference. Getting wound up because you missed a session might.

Totally agree with this. If i don't hit my session on hoilday it won't bother me. Actually the more I think about it, its probably better to just do nice 10k recovery runs and let the body recover and come back fresh.

Last year i did just recovery runs, will another think about this.

I agree with the general concept of taking it easy on holidays and getting out when you can and generally feel like- that said, it can be a little hard to get up early in the morning on holidays but a little discipline to get up and out can be very rewarding. Especially, if you reward yourself some with croissants after!

Personally, on holidays I much prefer recovery or LSR paced runs. Can explore the area with a nice gentle heart rate, a tempo run would just feel like hard work!

My gf and friends actively encourage me to go running on holidays. More often than not, I’ll find a great local bar/restaurant/beach.

Made some great discoveries over the years while out running.

That said, I keep it easy and use it as a sight-seeing exercise rather than any meaningful training.

I'm going to start my marathon training plan 2 weeks early, to bank time for hols. I'll go out every other morning early for 5-6 miles, but nothing more. Hols imo are precious and I'm not going to put myself under pressure to run long miles in the heat.

Thanks all for your feedback . I think I'll try and do a longish run and yes I will get up early ! Honestly nervous about running unknown places by myself especially if lonely or off the beaten track. Im sure there will be a long boardwalk or something .

I would usually do fast short runs on holidays - with the longest ever being 10k . So this will be a novelty anyway!

    Thanks again

If you are worried and you have a smart phone, download the offline googlemaps for the area just in case and bring it with you. (Can never rely on phone coverage when roaming in my experience) And if its a city, maybe bring some emergency taxi money with you.

I'll never forget the series of circles that I did while trying to find my hotel in Hamburg a few years back. Turned a 5km into an 8km!

I did a similar thing in Salzburg. I think I ran up the same street twice in opposite directions and didn't realise it until I got back to the top of the street. I have no sense of direction.

My wife is a Hamburger, because of running around the city early in the morning I know my way around better than the natives (I ran down Herbertstraße one morning for the craic)

Thanks again everyone for advice . In the end I managed 38k the first week with a LSR of 16k. The second week 40k with a LSR of 20k. I couldn't bring myself to get up before seven and ended up frying at the end of the 20k in a toasty 29 degrees . Happy with this. Did complain to hubby about the missing 5k from my long run but he just looked at me blankly muttering something about being on holidays and being obsessed . If only I could get him to read this forum!!!! I am consoled as I know my running buddies didn't do required LSR either - they only managed 23 so not to far ahead.
