So I bought one of these a few weeks ago, I have noticed on motorways that it dosent engage top gear until 152 Km/h.

    Is this normal?

    Anyone else have similar experiences?

The majority of C-class Mercs sold in Ireland are manual so there might not be a huge number of people with an auto model on boards. Is there a sport setting for the auto gearbox? If it's late changing up then it may be at a sport setting (which gives faster acceleration) rather than normal or economy mode where the gears will change up earlier. On the E-class (W211) there is a button close to the auto selector which changes the selection mode, is there anything like that on your car?

Edit: even at sport, 152 kph is very late for it to select top gear. Are you sure you're in full ('D') automatic mode? It's possible to restrict the gearbox to a maximum gear e.g. if you were climbing a long incline and didn't want the box to change up higher than third, you can flip the auto selector sideways to maximize the top gear, you do this by going from D to 4 to 3 and whatever gear is displayed is the maximum gear the box will go to. It may be that you have restricted it to fourth gear as a max. and it's only changing up to fifth as a last resort to stop the engine overheating. Make sure that you are in 'D' mode.

What RPM does the engine have at that speed?

Yep, shes in D, its up around 5600 rpm, but it seems to switch up quicker in lower gears

Might be a fault so, it should change up well before that level of revs.
