Oil question

I have a question regarding oil use and its affect on service interval. 10 year old straight 6 petrol BMW 175,000 km, the car uses about 1L per 1250 km. If the car takes about 7 L of oil, that means in 10,000 km (or an advised oil change interval) you have gone through 7 L of oil. Emissions are fine and the usage of oil is directly linked to milage, so I don't think the car has a problem and the 1L/1250 km hasn't increased during 2 years of ownership.

So does this mean I have longer, shorter or no difference in oil change frequency? Is the oil breaking down and causing deposits of soot? or is it being sent out the exhaust?

In theory it should make the oil change frequency longer because you're adding 7 litres of new oil during the interval.

What spec oil are you using and what's recommended for the car? Have you tried another spec oil to see if that's better or worse?

Only use the recommended mobile 1 0w40

I'd rather stick to what is recommended to be honest

The same. You change not only oil, but also the filter...

I guess you need BMW LL-01 oil... Get a 5W40 that meets that criteria - the consumption should be much lower... Like this: http://www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=7342958
