Query about Italian FTA channels on Hotbird 13?

    Hi,

Hoping someone here can advise. We installed a couple of boxes and dishes a number of years ago to watch FTA UK channels and FTA Italian channels. We watched the UK channels on Freesat Astra and the Italian channels on Hotbird 13. We now have a SKY subscription and box for UK/Irish programmes but have continued to use the Technomate box for Italian TV. In the last few weeks we seem to have lost all off the Italian channels. I rescanned yesterday but there is nothing. The UK channels are all still ok so I am assuming that the box (Technomate) is still working ok despite being about 7 years old. I am just wondering if this is a Hotbird issue or should we move to another satellite and if so do we need to call in a technician or can we do it ourselves in the settings of the box? Any guidance on this matter is much appreciated. Thanks.

Are all Hotbird channels gone or only the Italian ones?

Hi Lertsnim, sorry I should have said in my OP. It would seem all of the channels are gone.

Most Italian channels are now nagravision encrypted with a Tivúsat card.

http://www.tivusat.tv/sat-eng/tivusat/index.aspx Like the FTV cards for SKY there is no annual cost afterwards. Unlike the UK FTV card, it is only sold with a receiver or CAM, yes that sucks and yes it's a result of a legal battle. And you need an Italian PPS number to activate the card.

    Can you elaborate ?

Are other countries likely to follow ?

    originally the card was cheap

The retail price of the smartcard, though not currently defined, is expected to remain low, while covering the cost of the cards. No subscription fees will be charged to the consumer and there is no expiration date on the smartcard.

But you can't get a card without bundled hardware like a receiver or CAM http://www.tivusat.tv/pages/index.aspx

I can't see that happening here or in the UK as spot beams means tolerable leakage of FTA stuff.

This is probably more interesting given how FTA Irish channels are carried on SKY.

ing. Rai encrypted some of its content on the sky platform, including football matches. When RAI began encrypting its FTA broadcasts, Sky Italia launched its Digital Key DVB-T decoder that plugs into the USB port on its decoders and which incorporated all free DTT channels into Sky’s program guide. RAI’s decision obliged Sky subscribers to purchase a separate decoder for Tivusat, the free satellite platform owned jointly by RAI, Mediaset and Telecom Italia.

In its ruling, TAR ruled AGCOM’s decision as unlawful, stating that public service programming must be “universally accessible via all technology platforms” regardless of who owns them. The only condition is that the platform owners provide users with free access to RAI channels. The gratuitousness of the sale of programming to distribution platforms’ holders becomes in this sense a tool to ensure maximum accessibility of programming and accessibility for free. The sale of public programming from RAI to the distribution platforms might result in the introduction of additional burdens for the end user.

Sky, therefore, as owner of a programming distribution platform via satellite and available for distribution free of charge to the user has the right to supply free programming

The RAI decision reminded that RAI must comply with its public service obligations towards all Italian citizens. With this ruling, the Regional Administrative Court reaffirmed a principle of justice and a principle of non-discrimination towards Sky subscribers who, over the last years, have seen some programs being blacked out on their Sky decoders - as it has recently happened on the occasion of the European Football Championship - even though they pay RAI’s licence fee.

Found the link where SKY stopped RAI handing out FTV cards while looking up something else. Now you have to buy potentially unneeded hardware. It's another reason I dislike SKY, they use every trick in the book to keep customers.

    Use googletranslate on http://www.tvdigitaldivide.it/2012/07/28/la-rai-sospende-la-distribuzione-delle-tessere-tivu-sat/

TiVu uses Nagravision 3. Currently running in an ancient Ariva 200 (not combo) which doesn't need a CAM.

Humax Foxsat HDR only recognises Tivusat cam's on one in five boots. Judging by the interweb it works better if you have a small USB key and use the physical standby button rather than the remote control. Go figure. And yes it's bloody annoying seeing as how the CAM wasn't optional.

The Humax will recognise a Dragon cam and see the Tivu card as Nagra but isn't decrypting :(
    Hardware 4.1 , firmware 3.21

The OP's issue is related to the LNB/Dish or the cable being used for the 13E dish. Something has been knocked out.

There are still free Italian channels on 13e like the RAI sport channels etc.

If the OP really wants a lot of Italian Channels, then they should think of moving the dish to look at 12.5W or 5W.

The Mediaset MIS/PLS channels can be viewed with an enigma2 receiver and a TBS 5925 USB tuner connected.
