Gas Fire Not working

We recently bought a house and the gas heating is working fine, however, the gas fire in the living room will not turn on. The spark on the fire is working but there doesn't seem to be any gas coming through the pipes. We have checked the pipe and turn on the flow but still nothing. Any ideas what the problem could be? Cheers

    STOP!!!!!!
For your own and your families sake get everything checked out. If you have only moved in the chimney could be blocked up with a pillow or insulation to stop a draught coming down (see this all the time) the gas supply may have been turned off for this reason. Could be a blessing that the gas fire doesn't fire.
Get a local rgi to check everything out.

Sorry for my ignorance for what is an RGI?

    A registered gas installer.

Gas fires are extremely dangerous. I know there's one in the house I'm in the process of buying and I won't even attempt to turn it on until it's been serviced by a professional.

    What do you mean?
    Did you disconnect something?

No we didn't disconnect anything. There is a pipe at the side of the fire with a value which looked to be in the off position so we turned that on and tried the fire again. It still didn't work so we returned the valve to its existing position.
Have organised a professional to take a look at it next week so hopefully nothing major is wrong.

Would always be wise to ask an RGI to do a full annex E inspection on your gas system and certify it for you, will give you peace of mind.

Have you consulted the manual for the gas fire ?. The manually normally gives some basis diagnostic tips for common problems. For example, maybe you just need to change the batteries !. On my gas fire the manual allows you to light the fire with a match (in case there is a problem with the ignition side of the fire).

But as stated above, you most probably need a 'competent person' to look at it (i.e. and RGI).
