Travel insurance is a must esp when going to the states. If you need medical attention or get in an accident, the costs could be crazy high.

Make sure that your passport has an image of a microchip on the front cover, there's still a very small number out there (all expiring in the next few months) which don't and which will cause you to be refused.

Avoid bringing any meat or fresh fruit, almost certain to be confiscated, even if you promise to eat them on the flight. Once you pass the folk in US pre-clearance, you are considered to have entered the US so they enforce the food regulations as if you were crossing a point on the US/Canada border i.e. what you can't bring into the US, you cannot have on you when you go into the holding area before boarding.

Unless you have flown with United before you probably won't be able to check in online anyway, they are well organised in Shannon, check in is no problem at the airport, no need to bring a copy of Esta though many do, take a pic with your phone if you wish, for transatlantic flights we always allow two & half hours before flying for check in, security & customs and immigration

It's a waste of time printing it, even the US authorities say it's not necessary. Your ESTA is logged on their system with your passport number and if the agent enters your passport number and there's no ESTA, you can wave a piece of paper in his/her face but it will get you nowhere.

The only valid reason to print it is if you want to keep a record of the approval number for future use e.g. to enter a new zip code for the first night of a future visit on the same ESTA.

You need to enter your advanced passenger information as well when flying to the states.

This was the subject of a thread recently, OP is flying with United and it appears that they don't provide the facility for passengers to input the API data on their website (in the way Aer Lingus does) so it looks like the information is collected at check-in time and then transmitted to the US authorities.

Here's the thread, the last poster claims to fly United frequently and they look after the API stuff ...

Does anyone know what's Ethiopian Airlines are like for this? Can I do it myself or do they collect my information at check in. I'm not going for another few more weeks.
